Breastfed baby won't take bottle

We have tried for a week now to get our peanut to take a bottle. No success. I go back to work in 2 wks and I am very scared he won't take the bottle by then.

We have tried the following products:
- Munchkin Latch
- Nuk
- Playtex Nursers with silicone and brown latex nipples
- Avent
- Gerber
- Medela with standard and Calma nipples

All with slow flow nipples

The only success we've had at getting him to ingest anything is administering the breast milk with a spoon. (He bites on the nipples and plays with them, does not suck.)

We are waiting on the Comotomo to arrive in the mail. I feel like that is our last chance.

Everyone says "when he is hungry enough, he'll get it". But I don't want to rely on that. I would like to go back to work knowing my baby is able to be nourished while I am away.

Help!

Re: Breastfed baby won't take bottle

  • Have you tried any faster flow nipples? Perhaps he doesn't like having to work for the milk?? Depends on what your flow is like as to what he's used to. It might be worth it to try something faster to see what he does.

Maybe also try dipping the nipple in breast milk first. It might be a cue to him that if he sucks he will get more milk.

    Sorry. I'm not much help!

  • We had luck with the Joovy boob bottle with slow flow nipple.

The best advice is just continue to offer it. My LO finally decided to take one!

  • I'm in the same situation as you. I go back to work in two weeks and my little man won't take the bottle. I just went and bought a Latch bottle today. He took it but only while screaming. I want to try the Comotomo but they didn't have those at the store I went to. I might go to another to try that one. I'm just afraid he won't eat at daycare! : (
  • I recommend the Lansinoh bottle I was in the same situation
  • After a few weeks I have gotten my little guy to take a bottle from me atleast. Next step is MIL and hubby.

I tried everyday for a couple weeks until we got it down. I have a very fast letdown so I didn't have to worry about baby getting too much milk from the bottle. I ended up with MAM bottles which are the same brand as his pacifier. They have a much different shape than other bottles I tried.

Good luck to you I really hope you can get him to take the bottle I know how stressful it can be. Practice makes perfect and your lo will get it soon!
  • Have you tried dr brown? Those worked the best for my little one
  • We use como tomo and Mimijumi. I have 11 week old twins and one took to the bottle really quickly she had no problem and didn't care much(she is my easy going one) but my other little one had more trouble with it. I started with tommy tippys bc the were very recommended from other breastfeeding moms, but she wasn't having its I LOVE the Mimijumi bottle the best. They are more on the expensive side but it's worth it. I would also suggest squeezing some milk onto the nipple and kind of help him see what's in the bottle. The hardest part for me is I couldn't feed her at first. I had to leave the room and couldn't talk or make any noise for the first few times. My sister would feed her at first until she got the hang of it. It took my LO about 2 weeks to get where she wouldn't refuse and work herself up to where it was impossible to even get her to latch on the breast. Not sure if any of that helps but good luck.
  • Tommee tippee was the only ones that worked for my first child so I bought those again this time and ds will take them as well.
  • Tommee Tippee here too, and just for the first time tonight!  She latched with that big ol' latch and lip flange just like on the breast.

Slow flow nipples are better (so I hear), so it's more like breast feeding.  If the bottles toooooo easy, they might go off of the breast entirely.  (Depends what your BF goals are for when you're home with lo evenings, mornings, and weekends.)  My lo is a bit of a lazy eater, so I don't want to ever make it too easy for her.

I breastfeed. So it was difficult to find a bottle at first. I use dr browns wide neck bottle with a level 1 nipple. She sometimes wont take it at first when mil or hubbs offers but always when I do.
  • I went through the same thing with my two year old. We tried every type of bottle we could find but none worked. I finally figured out she would only take it if it was REALLY hot. Our bottle warmer was our savior!
