Tell tale pregnant signs and how to avoid giving it away

I am the good time friend, when work friends want to go out for a beer after work my answer was "yes!" But now I am 3 weeks and 4 days pregnant and not ready to tell ANYONEvi am pregnant yet, and I'm a horrible liar! I live in a small town and work in a small hospital and don't know how to get out of these social trips!

Re: Tell tale pregnant signs and how to avoid giving it away

  • Can you tell the bartender that when you ask for a drink it should just be cola?
  • Loading the player...
  • OMG I am too! I usually am the one who sets up the plans and I haven't lately and I feel like my friends are getting suspicious even though they haven't said anything yet! But like you, I am also NOT ready to tell them! I am only 4 weeks 4 days! my husband gave me a GREAT IDEA!!!!!! He said to tell people I am on antibiotics that cannot be taken with alcohol so I cannot drink!....you know this "throat" feels like it's not getting better! O:-)
  • I told every one im doing a detox and dieting for a month or two. I also cut out fast food so they believe the diet part.

Im 5 weeks and a day.
  • These are great ideas. No one would believe I was on a detox, but the antibiotics one might work. Last pregnancy I used to order soda water with lime and just pretend it was a G&T. That works well until somebody starts buying rounds. Then you are kind of screwed.
  • We are doing a huge beer olympics at our house this weekend and we sound like the same kind of good time gals. I don't want to drink but am struggling to find a cover up. Thinking about sitting out but it would be so blatantly obvious. I'd love some great ideas too! Detox isn't a bad idea!
  • Try doing social things at your place! I filled up a can of spiked snapple w water and "drank so much" on my birthday.
  • I drank a whole bottle of non alcoholic wine without anybody noticing at a party at my house! Then we announced it to our families and I told them I tricked them!
  • What about GERD? That was my excuse the first time around - and I actually have GERD, doctors advised me to cut out alcohol and caffeine for a couple months to see if it would help the acid reflux. You can use that!

  • Make a fake drink. Ask for sparkling water or tonic with a lime. Or I've told people I was so hungover from the night before and couldn't think about drinking again.
  • With DS I blamed sinus issues bothering me, which I have a history of, and then used the antibiotics excuse as a way of extending it. My friends called me out anyway.
  • We went to a concert with friends Sunday night. A good friend who would totally call me out for not drinking. It was in an amphitheater with lawn seating, so we "accidentally" got there early and bought canned beer which I then pretended to drink. In reality, DH and I sat our beers between our lawn chairs and he drank both of them. We used the ridiculously hideous price of beers at a concert venue as our excuse not to get a second beer each. Pretty sure we pulled it off.

I'd say just try to pick and choose which social stuff you attend. If you can get somewhere early, ask a bartender to be in on it with you, that would work (I did that once with my first pregnancy).

    Good luck!

  • It's so tricky not to get caught out isn't it. I say go for a gin and tonic without the gin or my best yet a ginger ale in a wine gls looks like a glass of Chardonnay
  • I quit drinking when we started trying to conceive, and I pretty much said that as I've gotten older the hangovers aren't worth it! It's kind of been a long con :)

  • I have my brothers wedding next weekend and k will only be 5.5 weeks at the time and really don't wanna give it away. Any suggestions? I'm a drinker so don't want anyone to pick up on it
  • When we meet with friends at a restaurant my husband and I will go early and explain to the waitress. I've been drinking water with a splash of cranberry juice as I usually drink water vodka cran. Last night we were out for "drinks" with them and did the same thing and at the end the waitress told me I owed her 3 dollars for the "fountain drink" in front of everyone. I was sooo flustered and annoyed! Not sure if they noticed or not. It's a good idea but has its faults.
  • I had my parents over for my dad's 80th. Hubby was out of town so it was just my parents and I. Really hard to hide, especially since my mom loves to drink! She noticed I was having club soda and she asked me if I was going to have any wine. I said later - but I'm not drinking right now because I have to drive to pick up dinner! She said that I was very wise. I poured myself a beer during dinner, didn't touch it, and no one said anything.
I think health excuses will give it away, unless it is something that is in line with what you would do.
If you go out a lot, saying you had too much the night before (drank at home or something) then that would be plausible.
I love the bar tender on your side idea!
  • I am a bartender, 5 weeks and 6 days preggers and it is SO hard to keep it from my coworkers and all of my regulars that want to buy me a drink. I am using the excuse of a 3 week cleanse, and lots of soda water and limes with family. At work I have gotten women who order a cocktail with their friends, then they either "go to the bathroom" or have their honey come by the bar and ask for that G&T or Vodka Soda to just be soda water with a lime. This solves the problem of other people buying rounds, the bartender knows to pour a virgin drink.  I also had a girlfriend that would go to all the social functions, but arrive early, buy canned beer, dump it out and fill it with water.
...at end the waitress told me I owed her 3 dollars for the "fountain drink" in front of everyone. I was sooo flustered and annoyed! Not sure if they noticed or not. It's a good idea but has its faults.
I'm sorry you had to deal with this. She was obviously an amateur that lacks tact.
    Good luck mamas
  • Haha! I am using the "I am taking antibiotics" trick tonight, lol.
  • I'm just fake drinking. Seems to have worked so far. :)

@chanelwest my friend totally tricked me at a wedding! She got a beer in a dark colored bottle, took it to the bathroom, dumped it out/rinsed and refilled with water. I didn't even think twice until I saw her and her husband at the on gyn a week later!

Fake drink if you don't want people to know... I told mY friends i was dieting, but when I announced my pregnancy they were like duh. You quit drinking. Luckily they were considerate enough to not say anything until I was ready to share!

  • I have 2 weddings and 3 birthdays out with friends coming up in the next couple of weeks!! A little nervous but definitely planning on going to the bathroom and dumping out and refilling with water. I also will prob use the I'm the DD excuse and ordering G&T, hold the gin!

  • For local socials the easiest way is to be the 'designated driver' so you can't drink then anyway!
  • I've found that if you hold a glass of wine or a cocktail NO ONE ever notices you aren't really drinking it! This has worked for me many times! Just walk around with a drink in hand then casually leave it somewhere and order another later!

I think I tricked my sisterIL last night! I held onto my husbands empty beer can and switched beer coozies with him and pretended to drink it! I was so worried because if anyone was going to pick up on us being pregnant it was going to be her! I think we pulled it off! 5weeks -- here's to about 5 more hopefully undetected! We are revealing at their moms birthday we think. :]
