14hr Plane Ride with a Toddler?

I saw some posts a bit ago about shorter car rides and entertainment.  DD (2.5 yrs old) has flown within the US quite a bit.  We're about to take a 14 hour flight direct (we're moving) out of the country.  I have an iPad with Frozen, Cinderella etc but she's not into movies.  We have some Luminosity games on her iPad but I was wondering if anyone has any specific games, toys, ideas for really long flights?

We will be flying with her carseat so that will help with sleeping but entertainment for the other many hours...I'm just looking for some creative ideas on a very long flight by myself with my little lady.

Re: 14hr Plane Ride with a Toddler?

  • I don't know if you've booked your flights already but my mom always chose night flights when we were kids. That way she only needed to entertain us a couple of hours in the morning. I'm a FTM so no games ideas but wishing you all thd best with the move.

  • I recommend valium - for you.
  • My daughter loves books, stickers, and coloring so we packed lightweight books, a notebook with a ziploc Baggie of crayons and a pen, and assorted stickers. We also chose late flights to help pass some w sleeping. She was a champ and everyone getting off was like I didn't know there was a baby on here! So find small items that will keep her entertained and pack lots of snacks!
  • I suggest new to her toys. New stuff keeps them busy forever! Kinetic sand, playdoh, mess free coloring books, new apps on her iPad, LOTS of snacks.

Prayers for you that she sleeps a good chunk of it!

  • We did 24 hours of flying last year, with one long flight of 14 or so hours, and we took ziplocks with different activities that were new that could be done on the fold out table. There is also the in flight entertainment that has kids movies and tv shows. We also took favorite healthy snacks. Make sure you let the airline know to give you a kids meal(s) ahead of time too.
We were seated near another family who came seriously unprepared and we ended up sharing some things with them because their kids were bored about 5 hours in and screaming the plane down.
  • Granted we've never done a 14 hour flight, but Post-Its with crayons and gel clings for the windows and tray tables have helped when we get bored on the iPad.  On the iPad note, my 2.5 year old just discovered TinyHands Sort 2+ and that app keeps her entertained for longer than anything else right now.
  • We are flying again soon with DS who is a little over 2.5---when we flew with him last year, we found that it was the little things that entertained him the most. This year, I have a bag with things that he has never seen or hasn't playing with in a long time. Stickers, post-its, coloring book, magic coloring book that the markers only color on that paper with, a new little book about dinosaurs and whatever else that I can come up with. I personally would not recommend toys that make a lot of noise or require space/get lost under seats easily. Brought some toy cars last time---that was annoying. I spent more time chasing them under the seats than we did playing with them. He played with this book for at least a half hour last time we flew:' https://www.amazon.com/Little-Puppy-Finger-Puppet-Board/dp/0811857719/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1438706572&sr=8-3&keywords=finger+puppet+book Even now at home it is still a favorite to him. And snacks---lots of snacks! We also brought dumb dumb suckers for him and will again so he can swallow something when his ears pop.

  • Oh mama, sending you some positive throughts for that trip. Yikes! I agree with new-to-her toys, games, stickers, etc. Anything that is new to them seems to be a hit. We planned for one new thing per hour (even small, like a pack of stickers), plus planned for one snack per hour so that we'd have enough to keep her busy.

  • Also, can you try to get a bulkhead seat? That way no one leans back into your space, you don't have to worry about kicking seats, and she can get down and walk in front of you with disturbing anyone or trying to slip under the seat in front while pregnant mama struggles to get down to the floor to pull her out ;)

  • These are great ideas.  I love the kinetic sand idea.  I'll be downloading the TinyHands Sort 2+app and bringing ziplock bags.  Thank you!
