How long does your LO nurse?

My DD is 17 days old & seems to have these marathon nursing sessions mostly in the evenings. I've been nursing her for almost 1 hour, 30 mins on each breast. I unlatch her most of the time because she falls asleep and she's doing a lot of quick shallow sucking. She is gaining properly so I'm not worried about her not getting enough nourishment. As soon as she realizes that she's no longer on the breast she immediately wakes up and cries insane amounts before finally falling asleep. Anyone else in the same predicament?

Re: How long does your LO nurse?

  • Yes. I am convinced my LO just uses me to pacify her (she won't take a pacifier, which I am ok with) She doesn't really suck to eat but she will wake up when I try to unlatch.

  • My LO does 15 minutes at the most on each breast but my milk flow is pretty insane if she pops of we both get sprayed with milk!
  • I follow a rec I read somewhere of limiting time to 25 min on a breast - beyond that they're using it to soothe themselves and not nursing. The first few times I pulled him off after 25 min on the 2nd breast he was upset but I gave him a pacifier and that solved the problem. He wasn't still hungry, just wanted to suck. Now he likes the pacifier when he's done nursing and doesn't get upset.
  • With my first son he did the exact same thing and it ruined BF'ing in a way for us. I was in extreme pain from him constantly being attached to me and using me to pacify him after he was finished nursing. It was exhausting. This time around with my 2nd son, I recognize the signs of a full baby better as well as signs of hunger vs gas pains or just wanting to suck to go to sleep. It has been a much much different experience thus far and he's 10 days old. He doesn't take a pacifier great but he does tske it after eating and falls asleep. He nurses the most 15 min on a breast and sometimes won't nurse on both sides. I just feed on demand.

My LO was doing this for several nights. I think one night I was at it for almost 3 hours ( but had lost all sense of time). The pediatrician said it was a comfort thing and to limit him to 20 minutes on the breast unless he was actively eating (suck & swallow). He said to use a pacifier to replace the boob. This is working really great so far.
  • My lactation consultant recommends 10 -20 minutes per breast
  • I wouldn't give them a time limit if I were you. Some babies get full in 10 min, some 30. I'd just watch their body language.
  • I have the same issue with my LO...lactation consultant recommended a max of 40 mins feeding time. 20 mins per boob but she hangs on for dear life when u try to break the latch and that hurts like crazy so I do give in on most days :(
  • Around that age it's most likely a growth spurt. Your LO is trying to signal your breasts to start making more milk. Marathon nursing is exhausting but it happens for a reason. Supply and demand except the demand comes first.
  • Valid point @awilson79 l should consider that
