Car seat protector pads vs insurance

Hello-
I registered for two car seat protector pads so my car seats wouldn't end up quite as full of Cheerios and baby barf. My mom was looking at the registry and noticed some people were commenting that if you use the pads and something happens insurance might not cover anything. Does anyone know anything about this?

Re: Car seat protector pads vs insurance

  • I don't know about insurance, but I have read that most car seat safety inspectors will tell you not to use car seat protectors at all as the car seat can more easily slide around and it's hard to get the car seat tightened as securely which could be a safety hazard. I think you can check the car seat manual to see if it's allowed with your specific car seat; some may allow a folded towel or a thin protector, but others advise against it. We're just going to skip them completely or use a towel.

  • I believe that the only recommended covers are those that can be bought through the company making the car seat (for example if i recall, Britax makes one for their seats). It's not recommended you use any accessories that are not deemed safe in the manual that comes with your seat. You can check with csftl website (car seats for the littles) You can find a lot of safety information there.
  • Most likely, most cheerios and stuff like that end up IN the carseat itself. Invest in a handheld vac/dust buster if you don't already have one.

As some of the PPs have mentioned, you're not really supposed to have anything between the carseat and the seat, as it can interfere with the safety.

  • My SIL mentioned this. I haven't bought the kind that go under the car seat but I do have a snicker to inside of it (or the stroller) for head support extra padding washing ect and she said the same about those so idk I just moved it to the stroller for now
  • You shouldn't get anything extra for the car seat like the neck things they are meant for strollers I guess or the car seat covers that r super cute that have a design on them insurance will void out if u have any of that stuff becuz they haven't been tested so if u had one and U got in a car accident or something happened to Baby basically they will not do anything about it
  • If it doesn't come with the car seat, it's definitely not recommended. Car seat safety testing is done with only the things that come with the car seat. Obviously lots of people use added things, it's a personal choice, I personally am only using what comes with it. And it is true most insurance companies won't replace with added items.
  • I believe it has to do with the warranty of the car seat also. If there are other things or it is not installed properly it is against warranty. So god forbid there is a car accident it won't be covered. They also say that the car seat can slide on it since its not all the way in.
