Pacifier

So I my 1 week old LO has been using me as a pacifier. He wants to be on my breast all hours past 12... But after a while uses me as a pacifier. We didn't want to use one. But it seems to be settling him.
Any tips on when to use/how to prevent nipple confusion?

Re: Pacifier

  • I was scared to start using a pacifier at 1 week for the same reason - but the pediatrician said nipple confusion was BS and said go for it. She was right, we've had no problem with EBF and using a pacifier. It calms him.

  • I am finding nipple confusion to be BS also, atleast for my boy. I caved & gave him one his first night home! He loves them for soothing. My lactation consultant said the "soothie" was best due to the nipple shape
  • My daughter was given a pacifier while still in the hospital and has had no trouble.

  • Awww cute! Well the pacifier has meant a very peaceful 6th night.. Thumbs up from me!
  • I read in the La Leche League book that it isn't so much nipple confusion as a milk supply thing. They say they are fine, just as long as they aren't used all the time.
  • I suggest a soothie. Or mam. Mam has bottles and binkies that mimic the breast.
  • I've been giving my LO a finger, nail side down, to suck on when it seems like she wants to be soothed and isn't hungry. She's still attached to me but it gives my nipples a break!

This is baby #3 and I have used pacis with all of them, as well as breastfed all 3 of them and none of them have ever had issues with nipple confusion. Sometimes they still have that suckle reflex after they're done eating and need to use something other than mom. That's usually when I give one.

ETA: We also use the Soothie.
