Car seat troubles

our son HATES the car seat. I swear even just mentioning it causes him to scream. He is a chill otherwise and the second we take him out he calms down.

Any suggestions? Is this car seat specific? I don't want to buy a new one. He is our 3rd and last child. It is a Chicco Key Fit if that makes any difference.

I am desperate for ideas!!

Re: Car seat troubles

  • My baby hated being in the car seat when it's not moving. He's 8 weeks old now and is getting a lot better with it. He is starting to be okay with it while at a stop light now but if he's out of the car and on the floor in it he will scream. I think they will just grow out of it.

  • Mine started out that way too. I started taking him for walks in it and now he loves it. He's 4 1/2 weeks old now. It's all about finding a way to make it fun for him.
  • Like PP said, my baby is fine if he's moving in it. He used to cry when we'd put him in but he's fine with that now. Now it's just if you don't get him in the car right away and sometimes at red lights. That's only if he's cranky or hungry anyway. I think they just have to get used to it.
  • I am hoping he will grow out of it but he has been screaming in it for 5 weeks now. We have tried a mobile, toy, etc but nothing has worked. Hoping he gets over it soon!!

  • My LO screams her brains out still at 5 weeks whether in it moving or not moving! I've tried everything I have no idea I just hope it gets better as she gets older ! It really sucks when all I want to do is be able to go out during the day bc im so bored being a stay at home mom.
  • My sister in law told me some of her friends have put an electric toothbrush in the car seat with their LOs. The vibration can sometimes help them stay calm. Hope it gets better for you all soon!
  • We have the same car seat and she hates it until we start moving. She's actually getting better with it as the weeks move on. Hopefully yours gets better!
  • The car is the one time we offer a pacifier (and thank goodness for a big brother who can be in charge of popping it in when needed)! Also, do you have one of those cushions around baby's head? We finally figured out with DS2 that thing was making him really hot. We took it out and just let his head flop to the side more (which is perfectly fine even though it looks awkward) and that helped him.

We also took out the cushion--that helped briefly but the screaming started again. He is fine usually on highway but in the city he is miserable. Which is hard because we live in the city and rarely travel on the highway

    Thanks ladies!

Just a suggestion. Have you thought about just putting The car seat inside on the floor and every now and then just putting LO in it. Hopefully will get him use to it.

My LO hated the car seat for the first 2 weeks. Eventually I realized we had the cushion part upside down (bad mom), and it was making everything a lot tighter for her. Could something be pinching your babe? Also, we used to put her in it while indoors and swing her back and forth like the swing. That calmed her.
  • LO hated her seat. We have the baby trend with adjustable base. I changed the angle setting on the base(it has 2 angles that fall within the recommended range) and it made a pretty significant difference. She still doesn't love it but she also doesn't scream bloody murder anymore. I've also ready that car seats can make reflux worse so you may want to keep that in mind if LO is showing other signs of reflux.
  • This is good to know about the reflux. He does have reflux and we have guessed that something about the scrunching in the seat.

We have put him in the car seat inside and not in the car but will try to do more of this. Good idea!

Even with a 3rd baby there is always something new.

  • My little izzy screamed in the car seat from the moment she got snapped in till she was out. It would give me anxiety every time we had to go somewhere.we have an orbit G3 which was a MAJOR investment so I was so worried we waisted our money. I ended up taking out the head rest thing and now she sleeps like a champ in it!
