How long will this pain last? :(

I got a 3rd degree tear when I had my LO 10 days ago...it's been hard to laugh, cough, walk, sit & use the restroom. I've been using all the items from the hospital (peri-bottle, sitz-baths, epi-foam, witch hazel pads, etc) and taking Motrin but I'm still in pain ALL THE TIME!! I'm also very sore all over (arms, thighs, hips, etc). This is very distressing for me because I consider myself to have a high pain tolerance & now feel like a total wimp :(
I delivered without the use of any medications & thought that I would be just fine after the delivery but I guess not!!
Anyone else experienced similar "after-birth pains?" If so, what did u do to relieve the aches & how long did it last?

Re: How long will this pain last? :(

  • With my first LO I had 3rd degree rectal tearing and an episiotomy. The recovery took quite a while but I felt a little better after a week, a lot better after two weeks and completely better by one month.

Laughing and coughing were hard for me too and is with this (much easier) recovery as well. It really sounds like you're doing everything you can, I hope it gets better soon. You're definitely not alone, don't get discouraged just give your body time. It does get better!

  • It gets better each day. I'm on day 18 and feeling better although not completely.
  • Wow this sounds exactly like me. I'm a week in and there have been many tears.... Mostly about how much pain I am in and how hard it is to move. It's a shame as I am worried it takes the shine off.
I also went med free and the tablets I'm on now knock me out. I once tried not to take them - big mistake! So now I keep on top of pain killers and break them up with ibruprophen to spread them out and manage the pain (so eg pain med lasts 6 hours take ibruprophen at 3rd hour so when pain med starts wearing off it's not as intense). I was prescribed both by dr.
  • I've also noticed I am sorer after too much activity. Eg went to the mall and suffered that day and next. SO pretty much has me on house rest now, with no house work :)
  • Thx ladies, feels good to know that I'm not alone! I've seen quite a few women "bounce back" within days and just thought something was really wrong with me :(
@clairelange - I have noticed that as well and have really tried to keep my activity level to a minimum! I've convinced myself in the last 2 days that I'm just gonna focus on taking care of baby...everything else will just have to wait!
  • I am going on 7 days since my c-section & it is also painful to cough & laugh
  • 13 days pp, 3rd degree tear. Every day is a little better. Ibuprofen helps, tho I try not to take too much of it. I'm ok laughing now. Coughing still hurts. Sneezing is the worst!!!!
  • 20 days pp with a third degree tear and a bruised tailbone. It does get better but it takes time. I didn't feel a noticeable change in pain level until after 2 weeks. I am still sore when sitting, mainly because of my bruised tailbone, and still some lingering itching around the stitches. Wearing these pads doesn't help, I have recently switched to panty liners as my bleeding is almost completely gone and that has helped my itching decrease.

Good luck, I know that first week or so I cried A LOT due to the pain and wanting it to go away. It gets better!
  • I had a 4th degree tear with my oldest.. I literally had one hole. The doctor had to put my rectum back in..
I highly recommend using a boppy as a butt cushion. Def use the sitz bath. Don't wipe your bum with toilet paper. Use tucks pads until fully healed. And in my personal experience.. Ibuprofen and colace were my heroes. The pain.. Hm, I didn't have a lot of trouble with it.. But I was sore for a few weeks. Well after the stitches were gone. Every day got easier tho. And then eventually the swelling went down, the scar went down. It was still tender for a few months tho. Like if I strained to poo. Or I sat wrong. But in time you won't even remember it.
  • 3 weeks PP and the pain isn't completely gone though it is a lot better. I couldn't get out of bed without my Percocet for about a week and a half after delivery. Now the only time I really feel any pain is if I stand too long or in a certain position. It's diminished a good bit that I'm confident I'll be pain free soon. Damn tears :(
  • I'm 3 weeks postpartum after a csection and still have pain after I do too much activity.
  • I was in extreme pain down there post partum. I also ripped. My doctor told me to just keep doing what you're doing and let your body heal itself. Around 3 weeks the pain started to subside and now 4 weeks post partum I am just fine. It was mentally draining to hurt so bad but just remeber there is an end in sight!!
