Formula feeding

my baby is one week old and I am formula feeding him. How many ounces would you feed your week old? And how do you know if they are full or not?

Re: Formula feeding

  • My DD is only 4 days old but she is my third FF baby. I can tell you it varies so much by baby, but a general guideline is 2-3 ounces per how many pounds your baby weighs. For example a 10 pound baby 20-30 ounces.  Check with your pediatrician, they will have more information especially since they have a better idea of your baby's health and size.

For me I can tell when baby is full when they turn their head or fall asleep.  I only feed when they seem hungry - rooting motions, sucking on hands or mouthing when you're holding them, etc.  It's different though if your baby needs to gain weight or is sleeping a lot and not taking regular feeds.  In general if my kids are healthy and gaining weight well I try to follow their cues.

  • My LO is a week old today. He eats about 3.5 oz. per feeding every 3 hours. He usually turns his head away or shuts his mouth very tight when he's done. At this point we are just relying on him to let us know how he's feeling. Last night he went 4 hours instead of 3 between feedings. We just kinda went with it.
  • One week today... Doctor told me he was good to eat 3-4 oz. if he is spitting up, it's too much. That's how doctor explained it to me. I haven't had an issue. He is eating 3 oz every 2-3 hrs. I know he is hungry when he is trying to suckle my breast when I hold him. I didn't breast feed at all. But he will try. I just try to follow him and what he needs. Right now, I'm trying to get him to feed less often. It's hard when he feeds every 2 hrs.
  • My four week old eats 3-4 ounces every 2-3 hours. Like PP said, I see if she is rooting or trying to find breast when I hold her. I did BF for 3 weeks and it was hard to figure out how much she wanted!
  • My Lo Was eating 3 oz at a week old. Her ped said "if she's hungry, feed her" as long as she's not spitting up its okay. (And not just the little spit up that happens if they get hiccups, or if you change them right after eating. But if they eat and instantly spit up like puke.
She's now 5 weeks old and eating 5 oz every 3-5 hours. Sometimes she only eats 4 oz. sometimes ill make a 4oz bottle and she will want more. I have learned when she's hungry and when she's full. And she barely ever spit up the tiny normal spit up, and never pukes. I'm so blessed :)
