February 2016 Moms

Any other high risk and pregnant for a second (or +) time mammas?

This is my 3rd baby.  Baby #1 was born at 33 weeks with no warning whatsoever that he was coming early.  Baby #2 tried to sneak out at 28 weeks but 9 weeks of strict bed rest and lots of medication kept him in until 37 weeks.

With this baby I have to go to a perinatologist and have cervical ultrasounds ever 2 weeks starting at 16 weeks until 24 weeks and if there are any warning signs I'll get a cerclage.  Also starting at 16 weeks I have weekly progesterone injections until 36 weeks.

Are there any other moms out there who have already had a high risk pregnancy and are at it again?

  • I was high risk with both of my pregnancies and, as of right now, I am with this one. With my daughter, I was diagnosed with SUA (Single Umbilical Artery) at my anatomy scan. I went for a second scan 2 weeks later at MFM to confirm the diagnosis and along with SUA they also found cysts in her brain (I forget what they are called, but the doctor said that it is very common and about 50% of fetus's have it and it goes away before the baby is born). SUA occurs in 1/100 pregnancies. There was nothing I could do about any of it though. They ran a bunch of tests (the only thing I refused was an amnio) and everything came back great. I was monitored very closely with NSTs twice a week and ultrasounds at MFM once a week to check fluid levels, the baby's heart rate and any other abnormalities. Because of the SUA they knew she was going to be small and they knew they would likely have to take her early but everything looked as perfect as it could until 35w6d when I was doing my kick counts and they weren't normal. My OB told me to head in to the hospital since it was a Sunday and she met me there. Her heart rate was low and so were my fluid levels so she was born that day via emergency c section. After she was born she was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 and she lived for 5 days. It was a total shock to the system. I was fully expecting to bring home a healthy baby girl. but didn't.

Fast forward 4 months later and I got a surprise positive pg test--we weren't trying and I didn't think I was ready yet; I was cautiously excited expecting the worst again but hoping for the best. At my 12 week visit they discovered fibroids on my uterus AND I was having gallbladder problems--she almost had to take it out while i was pregnant. I was monitored closely this pregnancy; this time we had a happy ending and I have an amazing almost 4 year old boy.

This time around, there is still the lingering Trisomy 18 looming over me,a fibroid still, AND now I have 2 cysts on one of my kidneys AND I'm having gallbladder flare ups again already. So, as of right now I' in the high risk category but will hopefully not be after my anatomy scan (which, after my daughter, has an always will happen at MFM) I will at least have 1 less thing to worry about.

    Sorry that was so long.

I am pregnant with my 4th but 3rd living child. I lost a baby at 19 weeks due to what they thought was an incompetent cervix. When I got pregnant the next time ( my first daughter) I got the cerclage at 14 weeks and progesterone shots from 16-36 weeks. I ended up getting the stitches out at 35 weeks due to
Contractions and then was induced at 39 weeks.

My second pregnancy the high risk doctor said he wanted me to try progesterone shots only with cervical checks every 2 weeks. I did and delivered my second baby at 38 weeks with no cerclage.

I see the high risk doctor next week but my OBGYN wants to just repeat the same approach, progesterone shots only and cervical check every 2 weeks.

I can definitely relate to the cerclage surgery if you have any more questions!
  • I was high risk with my twins and had cervix shortening and funneling beginning at 16 weeks. We weren't able to do a cerclage but did do progesterone, bed rest and steroid shots.

I'm not considered high risk again as of now but we are being cautious and are doing another cervix check at 16 weeks & 20 weeks to be sure it's not shortening again.

  • i am high risk this time around. my first pregnancy was perfect until i delivered- i have a blood disorder where my blood does not clot. i almost bled out. i needed multiple blood transfusions and was on bed rest for days- it was awful. my second pregnancy ended in an ectopic rupture- i needed emergency surgery and again, almost bled out. had to get a blood transfusion that time as well. this pregnancy, i have to go to a hematologist and with my ob come up with a plan for delivery. not looking forward to it. they are going to keep a close eye on everything, and will most likely need ultrasounds every other week starting in my 2nd trimester.

this giving birth stuff is no joke!
  • This is my second child and I am high risk as well! My first was born with an undiagnosed congenital heart defect and severe persistent pulmonary hypertension. For this child, we had to do IVF which automatically places me in the high risk category as well. I will have lots of ultrasounds and will do a level 2 ultrasound around 20 weeks as well as a fetal echo. After having a very sick child the first time around I'll do anything this time around to ensure a safe delivery with no surprises.

At Serendipity, my friend had the exact same thing. Luckily for her it was discovered before she delivered. So scary!!!!

Wow, that is a lot to go through!  Hoping for a healthy baby for you!

I really hope that I can avoid a cerclage!  Everything I've heard about them sound awful :-(

Oh man, the stuff you go through for your babies.  Hopefully all goes well!
  • I hope you don't need a
Cerclage either. I have to say it was probably the worst thing I have been through!! My stitches were
Embedded too so I needed surgery to remove them at the end too. It wasn't fun! But if it's what you have to do it's worth it!
  • I am pregnant with my 3rd. I have 2 year old twins and I was high risk with them because of the type of twins they are..plus my thyroid disease...plus I developed HELLP syndrome. This time I am high risk for the possibility of HELLP again and because they found an antibody in my blood that causes my baby to become anemic..it's a long story...but I'll be constantly monitored again with an MFM just like last time.
  • My pregnancy is high Risk due to mt diabetes.High risk pregnancies can be so stressfull. Im so scared and every week that goes by my stress level drops. Praying for all of you to have healthy babies.
  • High risk here. This is my ninth pregnancy, will be our 6th living, God willing. I've lost three babies 15-17wks during pregnancy and we have no reason as to why the losses have happened. I'm currently doing lovenox injections twice daily in case of possible undiagnosed blood disorder.

How scary! I'm sure you'll be feeling better once you get through the next couple of months.
  • I am high risk because my daughter was stuck during delivery because of her shoulder width. I'm scheduled for a c-section because the risk is just to high for this baby to have the same problem. I get another ultra sound at 35 weeks to attempt to measure shoulder span but OB says it will 95% be c-section.
  • I'm considered High risk, just because of my history of miscarriages and my MTHFR but nothing crazy.

I'm new to the boards, because I wasn't sure where to jump in...this thread felt like a good spot though.

This is our second baby. Our firstborn, Emmett, was stillborn February 25, 2015 at 37w2d. We were crushed. They never found any clear answer as to what happened, genetically he was perfect and everything else looked good. (One doc called it a "fluke", which doesn't seem like a strong enough word :( )

We were thrilled to discover we were pregnant again, but things have gotten a Little complicated. Apparently, they missed in my first pregnancy that I have a bicornuate (heart shaped) uterus. I also have a small ish hemorrhage in my uterus. I have my first appointment with the high risk doc next week...so FX that that goes well :/

So not technically considered high risk (yet?), but I'm in the office every week for scans and whatnot. We'll see.

  • This is my third baby, fourth pregnancy and I had twins the first time.  Twins that were born early due to preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome.  After having the girls, I had two miscarriages (one at just over 7 weeks, one at 10 weeks).  Add to that I'm over 35.  I'm a doctor's nightmare....or dream since I do have good insurance.  ;)

This is my third pregnancy, second child (hopefully!!)  I am high risk, because I have PCOS and had to use lots of fertility treatments to get pregnant plus having a miscarriage.  And with this baby I have a uterine fibroid.  DD was born via c-section cause she was frank breech (bum down).  So, more than likely, I'll have another c-section.  There is some silver lining to being a high risk mommy--extra care prenatal and postpartum. Good luck all you high risk mommies!

  • This is my second pregnancy.. The first resulted in an early miscarriage which wasn't anything big or concerning. But I got pregnant this time a week after my miscarriage so that was a bit strange and a bit worrisome because nothing really has time to recover from the miscarriage. But not too bad. What's really making my pregnancy high risk right now is that I'm pregnant with twins but one passes away. The other is healthy and growing but the other is still in my womb with it. It may capsolate and disappear into the placenta and whatnot but it also may not. The doctors aren't too concerned because if it doesn't I'll give birth to it when I give birth to the living one and the placenta and all that junk but they're keeping an eye on it and considering it high risk. It's a bit nerve wrecking for me honestly. And truthfully I don't want it to be there the whole pregnancy. I dont want to have to see my baby that isn't surviving and growing inside me for another 6 months... It kinda makes me sad but I suppose it also makes me even more greatful for the living baby... Honestly with all that I'm pretty over the pregnancy... I just want my baby..
  • I also have a vanishing twin! It never developed a heartbeat but has caused a lot of spotting and cramping. My doctor told me the same thing that it will most likely be absorbed and delivered with the baby. I have been worried that it will cause complications but my doctor assures me that it won't.
  • My first pregnancy was super smooth and was almost 13 years ago. Just found out today that due to me having an autoimmune disorder and of advanced maternal age I'm considered high risk. My obgyn referred me to a perinatologist so we shall see.
  • I am high risk because I am prone to Preclampsia. My first pregnancy it started developing at 30 weeks and then suddenly at 32 weeks it got so bad it was cutting off oxygen to my son so emergency CS. The second time everything was fine until 37 weeks then literally overnight it came back and I had to have another CS a couple days later so the doctor is sure it will happen again this time as well. Needless to say my body doesn't tolerate pregnancy well so I will be having my tubes tied during this CS
  • @AlisonW0118 with my twin I got to hear the heartbeat a couple of times then at week 10 it just stopped. I haven't had any cramping or bleeding which is making it easier. It just still worries me. But when I had my 1st miscarriage my hormone levels never rose to what they needed to and I think with this pregnancy my hormone levels only got up enough during my 1st trimester cuz they were twins so in a way I guess I feel that the other baby's whole purpose for being there was so at least one of them cud live but I still feel sad about it a lot of times.
