39 week apt tomorrow

I will be 39 weeks and 4 days tomorrow ( due date is Friday) and I have an appointment tomorrow morning. If they don't do an exam, should I request one? I haven't gotten any exams recently except about three weeks ago when they did the strep test and I asked to be checked just out of curiosity. This time I'm thinking about all sorts of things..am I dilating, is baby positioned right..etc. I think I'm just starting to get anxious, want to know he's doing ok in there!

  • It doesn't hurt to ask/find out, to see how things are (or aren't) progressing.

  • If you want to know then yes I would request it!
  • I would personally now at 39 weeks. I'd be wanting to know!
  • It's up to you. But just keep in mind it doesn't mean anything. Baby could be in position and you could be 3cm and still not go into labor for another 2 weeks. If you're curious you can ask, but it won't mean anything and might give you false hope.
  • You can have your doc check position (I do this every appointment) externally.

I would probably feel more stressed knowing how dilated I am (since you can be 3cm for weeks or go from 0-10 Ina day) but if you would feel happier knowing

  • Ahh thanks! Have your doctors been doing exams?
  • I personally wouldn't want to be checked unless I'd go past my due date. They ask at every appointment, but I refuse it. I will have them check this week because I'll be over 40 weeks though.

Will knowing make you take an action you wouldn't otherwise have taken? For example, would you consider a couple of rounds of accupuncture if they said you aren't dilated/effaced at all? If not, i wouldn't bother.

I'm 39 weeks today and booked in for accupuncture (with an accupuncturist who also happens to be a registered midwife) at 39+3 to encourage cervical ripening and head descent. My midwife checked externally today and said LO could be down a bit more, she knows i really want to avoid induction. Hasn't checked internally though and she doesn't as a matter of practice unless a patient really wants it.
  • I would say yes since you are basically at your due date. I haven't had any exams either and my dr is checking Thursday, which is my due date. I've agreed to know nothing until now but now I am curious! GL!
