Name poll

DH and I finally decided to tear open an envelope in which I had the ultrasound tech write the baby's sex down. We're having another girl! Now we're torn between the names Caterina and Penelope. Please comment on which you like more since I'm not fancy enough to know how to insert a clicky poll.

Caterina (nickname Cat or Rina)?
Penelope (nickname Penny)?

Thanks!!

Re: Name poll

  • Penelope is one of those that's become ultra trendy lately, also NMS. I much prefer Caterina.

Also, the name boards are awesome at this stuff.

  • I prefer Penelope, it's a classic!
    Congrats on your little lady!

And as @kwaldy said, you might get more of a response on the name board.
  • I lean more towards Caterina because of the popularity issue with Penelope these days. But I'm also one to be concerned with a name being too common. If that doesn't bother you then Penelope is a good name, too.
  • I like Caterina! Pretty and different. Cute NN's too. :)
  • I agree about Caterina.
  • I always thought Caterina was spelled with a K.. That just because I went to school with a Katerina.. Penelope is on my lists of favorites.. I know a lot of Penelope's though... I like Caterina better...
  • I love both, sorry I am no help.  I think either way, you have a solid name.
I will say that I do NOT like the nickname Penny.

  • I love Caterina. Penelope is a beautiful name too but I always thing of the pig girl from the movie.
  • Caterina is beautiful!

  • We considered Caterina when SO and I were picking out names. I do like them both though. Penelope is definitely more common right now...if that matters to you.
  • Caterina gets my vote.

  • I love them both. I like Caterina slightly better but it depends on how they flow with your last name or if you've picked a middle name.
  • I agree that Caterina is the better name, although, I do not like it spelled this way. All I see is the word 'cater.' Katarina seems much better to me, and you could still use the same nicknames.

  • I like Penelope, but I'm also on the 'dont like really popular names' train. Caterina is my favorite choice.

  • I love the name Caterina, but I too prefer it with a "K", bit really either spell is fine.
I like penelope, but I feel like people will constantly be saying "penny, penny, penny" like on big bang theory.

I prefer Penelope. Caterina is nice, but I think she would constantly have to repeat her name, spell it for people, and that it will be misspelled.
  • I personally prefer Penelope. I knew a caterina that makes me have negative feelings towards that name.
  • I love Caterina/Katerina! Penelope seems to be very popular recently. Not a fan of Penny, but you could use Nellie as a nn for Penelope.
  • Caterina/Katerina definitely. Penelope reminds me of Penelope the Pig... Would hate for my kid to be teased and called that.
  • I'm going to vote Penelope. I really like that name and it would have been on our girl name list if friends of ours hadn't named their daughter that. They actually call her Penny for short. I think it's because of her I like the name so much...
  • Penelope! I like Catarina also but not the nickname Cat.
  • I really like Caterina!
  • My 15 month old daughter is Penelope! We obviously love the name. I didn't notice it on any top baby name lists while we were searching for a name but of course now it's on the rise. We have only run into 1 other Penelope and she was like 6 so I'm hoping that there aren't a ton in our area with the same name.
We call her Penny and yes we hear the "penny, penny, penny" joke sometimes but it doesn't bother us. I love it because there are so many cute nicknames we can use while she's a child and then when she's older she can choose to go by Penelope. I find it to be mature and classic so it will suit her later in life as well.

I think both names you listed are pretty great actually so it's a win-win with whatever you decide on!

  • We plan on naming our lo Penelope so I am partial. I know the common consensus here seems to be that it's popular, but in my experience, I've worked in higher ed for several years, never coming accross that name, nor has my MIL who has work as a preschool director in NYC and come across thousands of kids in her career.
Like I said, I'm partial and dh and I have loved the name for a few years now. (Penny is also so super cute while young)
  • I like both names but prefer Catarina but spelt with a K :)
  • I actually really like both names but, if I had to pick one of them I would pick Penelope.

Penelope! I love the name Penny, I would totally be stealing this if we were having a girl. That is a darling name.
  • Thanks everyone! We wanted a name that was easily said in both English and Spanish. Catherine in Spanish is Catalina but that just reminds us of the "------ Catalina wine taster!" so we chose Caterina, which I know more Eastern European and is spelled Katarina. But if we spell it the Eastern European way, it is pronounced weird in Spanish.

  • My cousin has a little girl named Penelope and they actually call her "poppy" as a nickname- super cute! I love both names :)
