Blacked out/Passed out while pregnant

I am almost 18 weeks pregnant and last week I woke up, felt fine, ate cereal for breakfast, and went out to go check out and discuss my new job. Well I had been there for about 45 minutes walking around dicussing things feeling totally normal when all of a sudden I started getting dizzy and my eyes started to go black. I started walking to a chair 10 feet away and before I even made it I collapsed on my knees. I immediately got up and sat down and was feeling super hot and red in the face from being embarrassed and because of whatever had just happened. Well I sat there for like 5 minutes and then felt good enough to get up and walk around and finish what we were doing. I didn't feel back to normal but I felt okay.
I was freaked out and the man I was talking to was freaked out as well. This pregnancy I haven't had any problems or anything up to this point.

So I'm just wondering if this is something I should be super worried about? or if this kind of weird thing is normal for other pregnant ladies? any input would help! Thanks for reading!

  • No, that is not normal. Call your doctor.

  • This is something you should call your doctor about right away, pregnant or not.

  • I agree, call your doctor. I would be freaked out too if it happened to me.  Hope all is okay!
  • Sounds like sugar or blood pressure. Definitely something to call your doctor about.
    Hope you are okay.
  • The same thing happened to me yesterday. Everything started to get dark and I got really hot I had to sit down and drink some water. I checked my blood sugar and it was fine so I'm guessing it's from dehydration. Have you been drinking plenty of water? I need to improve on my water intake too.. I'm praying all gets better for you !!
  • When I was pregnant with my first, I worked at a smoothie bar during the summer and was constantly on my feet. I was takings customer's order, and the next thing I knew my face hurt because I just passed out and hit it on the computer screen! The customer screamed, and it prompted my manager to come out from the back to see what was wrong. They helped me back to the back, gave me water and a banana , and let me rest. I was fine after that, I think I just overdid it. I mentioned it to my doctor, and he just told me to take it easier and have more breaks at work. Maybe that was just your body's way of telling you to rest as well?

  • This is why I avoid the summer heat and if I have to be outside drink water the whole time I'm outside. My friend found out she was pregnant bc she passed out. Stay hydrated! Still, call doc and let them know!
  • Yeah call your doctor. It may have been a combo of pregnancy, being on your feet and nerves at the new job. A few years back I fainted during my first wedding dress fitting. I hadn't been in it or standing long. I just decided that I am a dainty flower and should be pampered accordingly by DH.
  • Yes, girl. Call your doctor! Ive had a lot of dizziness and my Dr. told me to start carrying a water bottle with me everywhere. It has helped a lot. We aren't doctors, though. It could be dehydration but it could be something else. Never hurts to call!

  • The same thing happened to me at about 14 weeks while I was at work. My doctor said sometimes there's just a random drop in blood pressure that'll cause it. She also said to make sure I'm eating something every two hours, particularly something salty like cheese and crackers. It hasn't happened to me again so hopefully it won't for you either!
  • I had some dizziness with my 1st but never passed out. My doc said to always carry a candy bar for a quick pick me up. Still, CALL YOUR DOC!

I passed out at 13 weeks with my first pregnancy. After all day in the ER, they said I was fine. My BP is normally pretty low and I guess it just dipped a but too low with the change in blood volume and all. But definitely go see you Dr and get checked out!
  • Definitely call your doc I was feeling like I was going to pass out but never did. I went to the doctor and my blood pressure was low he said I was deHydrated. I haven't felt like that since I started drinking way more fluids
  • I had a similar experience last week. I didn't actually pass out, just got so hot I started sweating suddenly and got really dizzy and needed to sit down ASAP. My boss put an ice pack on my head and I drank water and felt OK after a little while. She told me she also had a few episodes like that during her pregnancies. I think actually passing out is serious enough to call your doc and ask if you need to get checked out. It could be dehydration, low blood pressure, blood sugar, iron deficiency, etc. but you won't know until you talk to your health provider. Hopefully they can help you prevent this from happening again
  • Another vote for call the doctor!
  • I felt like this right before I had a massive attack of the runs. I swear I almost passed out then had to run to the loo.
Make sure you are eating constantly and are drinking way more water than what you think you should be drinking.
Hope your dr can shed some light
  • Pregnancy can do weird things to heart rhythms so you might ask for an EKG while you are at the doctor if they don't offer it.
  • Call your doctor. I passed out 3 times with DS during second tri. Not fun.

Drink plenty of water, but not TOO much. The source of my passing out was drinking too much water and causing an electrolyte imbalance. The dietician my stumped doctor sent me to had me keep a food journal and immediately noticed my water intake was crazy. Stick to about 100oz. It could also be your sugar or blood pressure. Either way, see your doctor!

  • I've passed out twice this pregnancy, first time was like your experience and I got up and laid down, I was outside at church and the heat made me feel so sick then I went down. The second time was at a baby shower and I really went down, I was out for a little bit and woke up completely covered in vomit.. Then couldn't stop vomiting. They called the paramedics and they checked my blood sugar and my blood sugar was fine. Again it was the heat the triggered me to feel sick. I had a few bouts at work too. My doctor wasn't too concerned but they wanted to see me and check baby, I would call and let them know. My doctor told me it can be hormones and this does happen to some women.
  • Call your doctor. That happened to me in ballet before I got pregnant. It was a blood sugar crash + overheating. I completely freaked the instructor out.

    Call your doctor.
  • I passed out in my SO's arms a couple weeks before I even got pregnant. He didn't know exactly what was happening, so I kind of took us both down, but he kept me from hitting hard when landing. According to my doc, who did an EKG, I am just a fainter. I did it a few times when I was a teen, too.

What the doc did say, though, was that SO did the exact right thing by letting me go all the way to the floor. So what I will say is if you get dizzy, try to lay down. It is your body trying to get more blood to your brain.
  • I agree with previous posters, call your doctor. They may want to see you to check you and the baby. I fainted at week seven of this pregnancy and my doctor wasn't very worried but still wanted to do a check up. She said that the body has a harder time regulating blood pressure while pregnant (due to hormones etc). I have a history of low blood pressure so am prone to dizzy spells but that's the only time I have ever fainted (got up too fast from a nap).

  • I have had episodes of passing out since I was 17. I have naturally low blood pressure and sometimes it drops too low which leads to passing out. They told me to drink plenty of water to help keep my blood pressure up and to lay down with my feet elevated if i get lightheaded. Definitely call your doctor to make sure it isn't anything serious.
  • I have a looooooooong history of passing out.  If you do not have a history of this, and nothing seems to have triggered it, I would definitely let your doctor know.

  • 2 days ago at work basically the same thing happened to me. I was talking to coworkers and I started feeling a little nauseous (which I haven't felt in weeks) then I started getting really dizzy and went to sit down. When I sat my ears popped and it was hard to hear and I felt really hot. Someone got me some water and I sat for 5 minutes then I was fine the rest of the day.
  • Last week I had a severe case of the spins while at a work meeting. Finally I had to request some water and sit for a while. I believe I was overheated and dehydrated because the water and AC seemed to fix the problem. I didn't actually fall over though. I would agree with everyone else, call the Dr. They never mind it when I call and occasionally I have what I think is a stupid question and find out it's something that was necessary to call about.
