August 2015 Moms

39 weeks and now I have a cold sore?!?

I'm so disappointed!!! I made it through the whole pregnancy without a cold sore. Now, with my impending due date of this Friday, up pops one of these bad boys! The only thing I can think of is how I won't be able to kiss my sweet boy. Arrrgghhh! I know it could be so much worse, so I'm trying to keep that in mind... But on top of all the other fun things (stretchies, hemorrhoids, etc.), I can't help but feel a little aggravated!

@KrystalP2286 Aww.. my dr put my I'm meds I started 2 weeks before my due date... no cold sores for this momma. I'm sorry dear, feel better take some L-Lysine 1000mg supplement a day and pick up some Abreva to put on it. Antibacterial soap or hand sanitizer will help dry it out too!

  • See if your doc will prescribe you Valtrex. I've only had one or two instances where I felt like I had it coming on during a pregnancy and the valtrex still worked the same as it did pre-pregnancy. It's Category B as well. Good luck! Hope it's gone before baby comes!
  • Check with your OB to make sure L lysine is safe. If you get the greenlight definitely take it. Every time I feel one coming on I just pop a bunch of those suckers and it goes right away. It's the quickest fix I've ever used.

Thanks, ladies! I went ahead and called my doctor earlier. Waiting for a call back. I usually do the L-Lysine and Abreva outside of pregnancy. It's just so frustrating! Maybe it's a sign my body is breaking down for labor haha!
  • Don't take l-lysine, it's definitely not safe during pregnancy! But afterward... l-lysine is a life saver. Lather some Abreva on that shit.

Doctor ordered me the Valtrex- twice a day for 5 days. Fingers crossed it clears up before he makes his debut!
  • How unlucky! I certainly don't want to scare you but there is a tiny remote minuscule chance of your baby catching a form of the bug that can make them quite sick. There was a case of it not to long ago here in Australia. But as I said its completely unusual for that to happen. Fingers crossed it's long gone by the time your bub arrives,
  • Oh noooo. I get them too so I can't imagine how you must be feeling. I'd definitely ask your doctor for some Valtrex/Valacyclovir. That's what I've been taking.

    Good luck!
  • Now that's just plain wrong! I'm sorry!
  • I got a huge one as well about 10 or so days ago, Im 38 weeks now and its clearing up thankfully!

  • @fionaward01 What kind of bug? I know obviously I can pass it on to the baby if I'm kissing all over him or he comes in contact with my saliva. I guess I just thought as long as I'm careful, it can't be passed on to him.
  • @malamaza Glad yours is clearing up! I've never taken this Valtrex, but two doses in, I definitely don't think it's getting worse? Hope that's a good sign!
  • @KrystalP2286 so glad your doctor prescribed it! Im on it right now as a precaution so I don't get one, and prefect timing as in started breaking out in canker sores in my mouth last week, which I tend to sometimes get before a cold sore. Hoping your cold sore heals asap so you can slather your baby in kisses :)
  • I usually do Lysine outside of pregnancy, but during (especially this late) it might not be a great idea, especially if you're taking calcium supplements. Glad you got a script!

I'm sure it's been set off by the hormones in your body preparing for labor :-D
  • @hollyberri I've been super stressed at work too! I work in a public setting where we had a very threatening situation posed towards me. I'm sure coupled with the hormones, my body is hating me. Let's hope it's a sign of labor, so I can get out of this crazy workplace !
  • @KrystalP2286 glad you got the script! That stuff really works, it's just dries your lips out overall but it clears up in a few days. People used to notice my fever blisters before taking valtrex and now no one even knows because it just looks like I haven't drank water all day for a couple of days. Good luck! Hope it clears for you before baby!
  • I'm so sorry! Valtrex is good stuff though. I'm due tomorrow andI felt the tingle this morning and took my valtrex right away. Crossing my fingers it does the trick! Good luck!

Just had to let everyone know that Valtrex is like a miracle drug! I've never taken it before, but my cold sore was already visible when I started the meds. It never got worse, blistered, or anything. It's just gone! I'm so thankful! I think I could love on my baby without worrying about spreading it to him now. I don't know why I have suffered all this time with cold sores when this stuff was out there!
