WWYD elective ultrasound?

i had an appointment today and it went great. I asked about when we can find out baby's sex. The dr said that at 16 weeks we can do an elective ultrasound if we want. It's $75, so not too expensive.
Here's the catch though. My husband will be offshore for about another two weeks and we want to find out together. So is it worth $75 to find out 2 weeks before my anatomy scan? I'm torn!

Re: WWYD elective ultrasound?

  • I'd say not if your husband can't be there.

  • He won't be at either appointment regardless. He's too busy with work right now and we are saving all his time off for February.
  • My doc said the same thing - we could do elective @ 16wk appointment for ~$100, or wait until anatomy scan and insurance covers it.

For us and our tighter budget, it isn't worth $100 to find out 4wks sooner (and its actually closer to 3 because I'll be 2 days shy of 17wks anyways at that appointment).  We want to find out the sex ahead of time, but aren't in such a rush - I'd rather spend the money on something baby will use or something special for DH & myself pre-baby.  We opted out of the elective u/s.

I guess it totally depends on if you would need/want to do something with that information in the 2 weeks and your budget!

  • It's totally your decision... is it worth it to you? Some people can't wait to find out, others feel apathetic. Do what you want.

  • I really want to know, but we had said we would find out together, so the ultrasound tech put it in an envelop type of thing. I don't know if I have the envelop for 2 weeks that I wouldn't be able to wait.

Is this your first? I can't see tickers. I feel like that first glimpse at your baby (when it actually looks like a baby) is more than just finding out the sex. It is fun to see baby moving around in there and see the little features. I wouldn't want to do that without my husband if I didn't have to.

If you're going to hang onto the envelope to open together anyway and he won't be back for 2wks (when you could get your regular a/s), what's the point in doing it early?

  • I wouldn't waste $75 to know two weeks earlier. Why do you need to know asap? Wait for the anatomy scan. Spend the money on something useful for baby or start a college fund.

  • If you have the money to find out early and he isnt going to be at either then why not? However, if its going to make yall short a month and/or he will be there for the other I would say wait. Its ultimately up to you.

  • @curiouskiddosmama can I threadjack for a minute?

I see all these other mothers posting u/s pics and my doctor won't do an u/s until 18-20 weeks. It's making me really sad and sort of anxious. I just want to know my little lime is doing well. I can go to my gyno and get an u/s for $50. Would you ladies do that?

  • I would definitely do it if my DH were going to be home with me that evening. But in your situation, I'd just wait.

  • I would save the $75 and just wait for the anatomy scan.  It isn't going to make a difference! lol

If you DH was only able to make it for the elective, then I probably would, to enjoy the experience together. But since he can't be there for either one, you might as well save the cash.

  • I was wondering the same thing. I go in on the 20th and they said me and H could find out then... but he doesnt want to spend the extra money lol cheap ass. But my doctor does the anatomy scan at 20 weeks I think... So I am trying to figure out if I really want to do it as well.

I would. I have seen mine 2x now so Im good with waiting until the anatomy scan (even though we are Team Green) but if I hadnt had one I would totally pay $50 to see the lil lime!

I've had 3 us's but the first one was too soon, the second one was just a gest sac, and the third was fetal pole and heartbeat but that was all before 7 weeks.

  • I would wait. I would be way to tempted to wait 2 weeks to open the envelope. I know it's not a lot of $$, but save it. That's just me though.

  • We had a 16 week scan for baby #1 for a totally different reason and the tech offered to try to determine sex but couldn't see anything.  I would save it for the 20 week scan since it's more likely they can find out and I would hate to waste my $100 that I could be spending on new baby clothes.
  • When we had our NT scan I was going to find out if they offered, but when the nurse said they didn't do that at this office, I figured it was fate that I needed to practice patience and wait.

I could have lied and said I couldn't hear the heartbeat on the Doppler and we would have seen him or her today. I should have done that. I think that's part of the reason I want to do this. It's different to see them when they look like a baby as opposed to a dot. I don't think we are going to do it. It isn't my first, it's my second. The $75 wouldn't put us short, but part of me is wondering if I would really be able to wait, and I like the idea of finding out with him. Either way it would be bringing an envelop home because he won't be at either appointment.

He is too busy with work right now to make it to any of them. So he wouldn't make it regardless. It's more me wanting to find out at the same time he does, and not telling him by text message.

Exactly! I'm anxious because of my age and I just want to be sure everything is going as it should.

For $50, yes I would do it.

  • Doesn't your OB have one in the room?
Whenever I go to the doctor, she asks me if I want to see the baby and she shows me right there for like a minute. I get my more involved ultrasounds (nt scan, anatomy scan) at the hospital and those are the only ones submitted to my insurance company. The doctor doesn't submit when she just does it.
Maybe that's weird... I thought it was normal

  • I am way too impatient and too excited to find out the sex, so I'm opting for an elective ultrasound for $100 this coming Thursday. I am using my birthday money- it's my gift to myself. This is our first child. My SO has the patience of a Saint and can wait to know sex, but it's me that is way too antsy! I'll be finding out 4 weeks before my Anatomy scan and to me it's worth it.

Nope, our ob office has 2 machines so you wait for the ultrasound and then generally wait to see the dr. You must have a pretty high tech office that they have one in every room. That's pretty nice.
I think we've decided not to do the elective scan. I don't think I would be able to wait until dh is home, and if he gets delayed at all off shore then it was a really big waste of money as we may only be finding out a couple days early.

It's not a high tech machine like the one my hospital has- just a small one with a small screen that's black and white. Personally, I wouldn't be able to have that envelope and wait either! That'd be torture. I have an early anatomy scan at 15 weeks (next week) and I'm a little worried they'll be able to tell the sex that day because I have a sex reveal cake planned with my family in Sep. after my normal 20 week anatomy scan. If the tech asks me if I want to know at 15 weeks, I don't think I'll have the willpower to wait! I may find out with my husband and pretend I don't know with my family lol.
    I don't know.

That's what mine does, too. He's used the portable machine in his office every time I've seen him but doesn't bill my insurance for it. I've only seen the US tech twice when I've gotten better pictures and those are submitted to my insurance.

That's so awesome! I'm kind of jealous ;)
  • @curioskiddosmama, Yeah, it's super nice! He knows I'm super nervous after my MC so basically told me at the beginning I can come in as often as I want for reassurance. Now that I'm 13W I feel a little more "in the clear" so am cool with the every 4 weeks visits, but it's just nice to know that they're so accommodating. I love my doctor. He actually was my mom's doctor and delivered me!
  • KiekKiek member
We did that with our daughter. The place we went was $75 and gave us tons of pictures and a video of the whole ultrasound which lasted 30 minutes. She even gave us a chance to see our girl in 3D for a bit. It was very cool and so worth it to us. My Dr tended to rush appointments so it was so nice for us to be able to see our baby and just take our time and enjoy to moment.
  • I also realized I never answered the original question! So rude of me. Honestly I would probably pay the $75 to have it done early just because I'm impatient and have little self-control. Since it doesn't sound like your husband can be there no matter when it is, I guess it all depends on your budget and whether there's something you'd rather spend the money on than find out early. Exciting stuff no matter what you decide!
  • I am doing one earlier so my husband can be there. He leaves a few days after for deployment, so we are hoping to find out together.  That's the only reason it's worth it to me, so I would say if you could do it together then go for it. If not, I'd probably just wait.
  • I can't wait to find out but I won't be doing an elective. Patience is a virtue and it's just not worth the extra money not to wait a few weeks when we could just spend that on things we need for the baby.
