Babies R' US

For the experienced moms out there or mommas that have already been baby shopping, my SO and I are going to BRU tomorrow, I wanted to get tips to on what to look at/ buy right now that might slow my urge to buy literally everything baby related I see.

What do you buy before your baby shower, is basically my question. (:

Please please no rude comments, THANK YOU in advance & I wish a happy & healthy pregnancy to all !

Re: Babies R' US

  • The only thing I bought before my shower was the crib (since I wasn't team green I waiting until I knew the sex so I could pick girly/more masculine based on what he would be) and when I found out the sex, a boy, I went and bought some cute boyish blankets. I also eventually bought a baby book but I think that about it until after the shower. Be careful buying too much because, depending on what your friends and family want to do for you, you could limit what they can afford or sometimes their generosity by buying too much of the little things. I was surprised when a friend bought one of my car seats I had on the list. And I don't mean to sound gift happy about it, but my mom has a tendency to buy too much crap and for my brother's wedding shower his friends complained that there wasn't enough price appropriate things they could buy him since my mom bought it all. If that makes sense.

  • The crib for us, we made our changing table. Everything else register for. Bbrus offers a completion coupon for things on your registry so you can get a discount. Of course if something is on clearance you love such as a bedding set, I'd get that. You can always use multiples for crib sheets, blankets etc
  • I would look at the travel systems and car seats. Test them out. If you are getting a stroller, how easy does it fold? Does it have good storage? Jogging stroller vs. Basic stroller. I would also look at the cribs. Keep in mind, a convertible crib does not come with the conversion rails, that is extra. Sometimes, by the time you get around to converting the crib, they don't manufacture those rails anymore, so might be something you want to ask for or get now. Also, check out the swings. Some only take batteries (like 9 batteries that they suck through), others only have a cord to plug up, some have both options. These seem minor maybe, but I worked at BRU for 5 years while in school, and I heard so many complaints about the things I suggested. Helped me when I had DD, I knew what to look for and have no regrets on my big baby gear choices.
  • I'd have to agree. Try to just register and if you really want to buy something go with diapers, wipes, that kind of thing.

If you can help it, don't buy anything. Register for what you want and see what you get for your shower. If you plan on having more kids, go gender neutral where you can: stroller, car seat, pack n play, high chair, etc. I got pretty much everything on my registry with our first (a boy) so when we had a girl two years later all I really needed was clothes, diapers, and bedding.

Edit to add: I agree with PPs to definitely check out big ticket things that you like: cribs, strollers, car seats, etc. so you have an idea what you want. Also, talk to other moms and look at reviews to get opinions.

  • @rachrobertson thank you thank you thank you, like that helped so much I would not have even thought about the conversion rails, another weird ish question how can I find out if a car seat would fit in my truck ? I wish there was a website that would give you a list of measurements of what would fit and what would not. Anyone have any ideas ?
  • just curious, what kind of rude comments were you expecting from people on here?

I agree with PP on just registering..maybe because that's all my H is letting me do right now. Always rains on my parade..

  • I agree with all the PPs who say don't buy yet just register. I found this website when I was pg with DD and highly recommend using it to create your registry, GREAT advice on here: https://www.lucieslist.com/

  • @lovelydaye Lucie's List is my new favorite thing. I'm reading everything on there, then looking for the best prices on the items that sound like a good fit for us to fulfill my overwhelming need to shop! Picking out items to register for seems to be doing the trick so far, and it's sparing my bank account.
  • Since you're early on and no one will look at your registry this soon, use the scanner to scan in anything you think you want or anything you want more info on. If you see 3 strollers you like, scan them all so you have a list of what you want to research when you get home, then you can delete everything you decide you don't want.

I wouldn't buy anything at this point.

Most stores will let you leave a drivers license in place of taking out a model car seat to make sure it fits. Same goes for strollers to make sure they will fit in your trunk.

  • Keep in mind that if you are registering too early before your shower, things will clearance out and then you will want to make sure that you update your registry either in store or online. Before my shower, I didn't buy anything. The in-laws bought our crib and dresser. Outside of that, which was our shower gift, I think I bought maybe an outfit or two just for fun once I found out the gender but that was it. People will buy you a lot of stuff---and whatever you are missing, you can use your registry completion discounts on after the shower. Plus you will have cash and gift cards to use from the shower instead of using your own money.

  • @bfavors I have not had anyone personally leave a rude comment but I have seen other discussion boards that people commented on that I feel like the person was being put down or bullied, and I honestly do not want to deal with that whatsoever. I feel that people should not be made fun of or put down or talk to like they are stupid, because they asked a question that was sincere to them.
  • With all that said, don't assume you're going to get a ton of gifts and money/gift cards at your shower.

If you assume you will, and you don't, you're going to be super disappointed. When I registered, it was basically just for me to keep track of what I needed to get (or wanted to get) and if anyone wanted to, they could see what I needed too. I didn't end up getting much and no one bought off my registry but that was completely okay with me as I didn't expect anything to begin with.

  • Also FYI I just got an email from BRU for Pampers. $10 off when you buy a value box of diapers reg. price of $42.99 and a value box of sensitive wipes 808ct.

  • I'd stick to things you know others are unlikely to buy for you like breast pump accessories, nipple cream, milk-enhancing teas, cloth diapers, etc. buy one item of clothing to quell the urge and then get the registry gun and make your wish list.
  • Car seats for the littles on FB can help you find a car seat that will fit. It is run by car seat techs. Very helpful.

I don't know if its different with babies (as this is our first) - but within a week after doing this with our wedding registry - people were calling my mom to ask which set of dishes were for which occasions so they could choose and buy accordingly.  So I've started saving the links to things I think I might like - but DH and I are not going to create/put on a registry anything until we "know" its something that'll stay on the registry.

But we are holding off on buying anything until after we even decide if there's going to be a baby shower.

Can't you make your registry private until you are ready? I know I can do that with Amazon, and it's been too many years since I've made a registry anywhere else..

  • I'll chime in once more to say that I HATE HATE bru....we had a bad crib experience and their customer service was horrendous.  I registered at Diapers.com and was so happy with it.  Of course I went to the brick and mortar to look at stuff to see it in person; but I plan on registering at diapers.com or buybuy baby this time around (if I register at all)  Diapers.com gives everyone who buys from your registry free shipping and you get cash back for $$ spent by your friends and family so I ended up with money to spend after my shower.  Also, I called their customer service once and a real person picked up on the first ring, it blew me away.  They ended up price matching a very expensive car seat that was on sale at none other than BRU.
