Driving this late in the game?

37wks now and supposed to drive 2houra away tomorrow for a family party. DH does not want to join because of a football draft (yes I know...) But I am nervous driving by myself this late in the game. He has been very helpful with baby stuff so I'm trying to be understanding but I want him to drive with me. Thoughts on driving??

Re: Driving this late in the game?

  • If you haven't been showing any signs of labor, I think it would be fine.  Also if it's in an area with a hospital that's a reasonable distance, that's a huge plus... Of course if i had any concerns though I'd check with my doctor first.

  • I didn't have to drive by myself, but at 37.5 weeks, I went an hour and a half from home for the weekend. Like pp said, if you have no signs of labor, I'd say it's safe. Unless your doctor advises otherwise of course. But if you aren't high risk, I wouldn't stay home just for this reason. Especially if you're a FTM, chances of having a labor so quick you can't get home to your own hospital and doctor are slim.
  • We went 5 hours away at 37 weeks.  I had no signs of labor or any concerns.  Honestly, I felt comfortable because if worst came to worse, I was visiting developed areas.  If I was going to say the middle of North Dakota...I might think otherwise!

  • I would go. I went on a day trip last weekend 90 minutes away at 39 weeks
  • Go for it! You should be fine
  • It's fine - I drove for work for my last pregnancy ... (Lol that wasn't my job actually but just an aspect, sounds funny to me now!) but doc said it was fine just know where the hospitals are and keep your gas tank more than half full.
  • I agree - if you're not showing any signs of labor I don't see why not!! Just be careful and make sure you always have a charged cell phone and you keep your gas tank at least half full. If you're REALLY worried you might also look up where the hospitals are along the route just so you know, and have a copy of your medical records with you. I flew to Denver from DC at 35 weeks and those were the two extra things my OB recommended - she said that the more prepared you are, the less likely it is that something will happen :)
  • Hmmmm. Honestly I wouldn't drive alone. But that's just me. Do what you feel comfortable with.
  • ^this. I was thinking about going to our nearest Buy Buy Baby an hour away by myself and then realized I didn't want to go that far alone. It is also in a very high traffic area and has potential to be longer than an hour.
  • I wouldn't think twice about it, but that's just me!

  • I'm driving by myself 3 hours today to join my family on vacation today. I have had no signs of labor And I refuse to give up eveything in life. I won't be going out in the boat a ton but I plan on reading, relaxing, floating around for the next three days. Also not having to cook is a major plus. Mental health break sounds awesome.

Some of the smaller town hospitals in North Dakota don't deliver babies. In an emergency I imagine they'd have to but most other expectant moms I know here outside of Fargo and Bismarck had to stork nest at the end.
  • Drive away! You've got a few weeks to go and as long as you are not in labor there's no reason not to!
  • I'm 40 weeks 2 days and I drive an hour through rural North Carolina to work everyday by myself. You'll be fine!
  • i think you'll be fine, but i think your hubby is a douche. I've got no room to talk, my hubby is making plans to be 4 hours away 2 weeks before my due date and out on the lake fishing, a 1-2 drive from shore. Doesn't help that my Dr. told him i was highly unlikely to go early based on my current progress. That being said, if i tell him last minute to stay, he will.
