Babies: 6 - 9 Months

making baby food

How do you make your baby food? I want to do it and have tried it a couple of time but I'm not sure I'm doing it right. After you steam the hell out of it do you just mash/purée or do you strain too? Do you boil? Do you freeze? How long does it keep? I heard only for like a week but that seemed very short to me especially since it's frozen.

I made all of LO's food. It was so much cheaper for me.

It all depends on what I am making. I generally boil or steam whatever fruit or vegetable I am making, put it in a food processor, add BM/ formula if needed, then I put the puree in ice cube trays. After it is froze, I put all the food into ziplocs. Depending on the food it can stay in a deep freezer for 6 months.

I also found it was helpful to go to the grocery store and look at the pre packaged purees for idea on combined foods. Who knew my LO would be obsessed with sweet potatoes, ginger and mango? Also, avocado, pineapple and banana was a big hit.

  • You didn't strain the food after purée-ing it? I want to make mine to save money as well. The price of formula is killing us...baby food is just going to make it worse! At least I can make the baby food...bfing is out of the question at this point.

Nope, I didn't strain anything. It seemed like just another step to me. And LO never had an issue. We started with avocados and sweet potatoes (which I peeled before steaming) so there wasn't really anything to strain.

  • You could skip baby food all together or at least skip purees and just feed your LO what you eating. Soft, small pieces of food. I am doing that with my youngest and it's so much easier.

Thanks for the website! I made peas last night! submerging them in ice water really does make them purée more smoothly! He had them tonight and loved them!! I will definitely be using this site for recipes once he is eating a variety of foods! Thanks again!!
  • To defrost home made frozen baby food do you just stick it in the fridge the night before? Do you all heat it  up before giving it to LO or do you give it to them cold?
  • If I remember, I will take out the night before but (hopefully this is ok) I take it out as I use it and defrost in microwave. I hear it up for LO either way. He's not a fan of cold things just yet, plus I think that peas that are cold are not that good...so I guess I'm projecting my preferences on him haha!!
  • I take mine out a few hours before and since I still don't have a microwave (long story) I fill a bowl with boiling water and put her food in a heatproof dish, in that bowl, to heat up just enough for her to eat.
  • I have the baby bullet. You would need a food processor or a high speed blender. The baby bullet comes with a book that tells you everyithng you need to know about making baby food. I don't cook bananas. I didn't cook the pear either. It was soft enough to blend. Green beans, peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, apples... they need to get steamed or boiled. I start by blending first then add water to get the consistency. I then freeze the servings. Baby bullet comes with a silicone freezer tray. I then pop the servings out and put them in a labeled Ziploc bag or put the serving in the cup (comes with the baby bullet). Theres dates on the cups so you know when it was made. The food is good for 3 days in the frig, 3 mos in the freezer. So far I have no problems with the baby bullet. Some of the fruits she will eat out of the frig. For the most part I take the veggie and add a little breastmilk/formula to it, stick it in the microwave just to get it warm. We have no problems.
