TTC After a Loss

Yoga while TTC?

Has anyone received any advice on exercise, particularly yoga & weight training, while TTC? I work out about 5-6 times a week and alternate between yoga, interval training, and running. I've read that yoga can be risky during implantation and the first trimester in general but have also read it's harmless. When I was pregnant I continued to run and do yoga (modified) as much as my energy level would allow with my obgyn's blessing, however I miscarried at 9 weeks. My doctor told me that nothing I could have done could cause a MC that early but I can't help but think maybe my continued work out plan had something to do with my loss. Now I'm kind of paranoid to keep doing yoga and really exercising in general while we're TTC. Has anyone received any advice on this? What is everyone else doing as far as exercise goes?

  • Exercise is fine as long as it isn't in excess. Extreme fitness addictions can be problematic for TTC or in pregnancy at any time, but it sounds like your routine would be fine. Talk to your Dr if you are concerned, though!

  • Thanks! I would definitely agree that I do not have an extreme fitness addiction :) I just try to do some kind of activity most days of the week. It makes me feel good and helps me sleep. After my miscarriage I'm a lot more conscious of my body and what I'm doing to it and how that might affect a baby. I feel like it's so hard to know what's OK and what's not with all the conflicting information out there. I was talking to a friend who is also TTC and she was saying how she isn't doing any exercise and that yoga is especially bad for women TTC etc.etc. I realize she isn't my doctor, but she has been through quite a lot over the past few years while TTC so she really freaked me out! My doctor has an online portal where I can message her, so I think I'll do that. Thanks again!

  • You should be able to okay. There is some crazy stuff like bandhas you don't want to practice while TTC, but I doubt any classes will have you do stuff like that.
  • The only thing I've heard is to avoid things like hot yoga - just like you would avoid saunas and hot tubs while ttc or pregnant.

  • My naturopathic doctor, who specializes in fertility/IVF, recommended to continue your fitness routine as normal until you find out you are pregnant (I do hot yoga).
