NPR - Any Child Psychologists out there? Need Advice

Any of you ladies work in child or family psychology? Having some troubles with our niece and need some advice. We had her seeing a behavior specialist until last May (2014) but she was not right for her. She was diagnosed about a year ago with Reactive Attachment Disorder and while I felt like we had a good handle on it, it seems to be slipping (new baby on the way and some issues with her mom's visits, its understandable). No one within a half hour radius of us is taking new patients under my health insurance and with her starting school in a few weeks, its not going to be easy getting her to appointments that are an hour away. Just hoping to have someone's input on how to help handle her stress. I know without meeting and working 1 in 1 its going to be difficult but we are going crazy here not knowing how to help her!

  • I have my LPC, I have worked with children and adolescents with multiple diagnoses including RAD. However, I have zero training here. My best suggestion would be to look online for parent support groups. Connecting with other parents who face similar struggles on a day to day basis. Depending on where you live, there could also be an in person parent group.

Hopefully someone in here is trained in working with RAD diagnosis...

  • Thank you! I will take a look. Most resource I have found only deal with RAD when the birth parents are not involved. From my personal experience, it is way more difficult to navigate with one of them involved (and not very supportive unfortunately).
  • I have my MFT but have minimal experience with RAD. My advice would be to explore all of your options at your niece's school if you aren't able to find a therapist close enough. Everywhere is different, but hopefully they have a School Counselor or Psychologist who she can see. I like PP's suggestion to track down some support groups for you and your partner. Good luck!
  • As PP stated... Use your school's resources.. Also- does your county social service agency have any options?

  • @noobmama83 her diagnosing psychologist did recommend an IEP at her school, however she did not meet the requirements they have. They agreered to her seeing the counselor once a week. Then, 3/4 through, they stopped with the excuse that "other kids need it more" at that point, things at home were pretty "normal" and we didn't push it. Now that things are all crazy again, I am planning to push something this coming year. Luckily this year I know her teacher and feel like she may be more understanding.

@ann_jeremiah I am unaware of any social service assistance, but will look into that as well.

Thank you all for you recommendations, I feel like I am getting more places to turn to then I had!
  • I have my Master's Degree in Special Education. I agree, that tapping into your school resources would be helpful, although it looks as though she doesn't qualify right now. You could have your school look at placing her on a 504 Plan if you feel that her diagnosis is impacting her education. In a nutshell, a 504 Plan is a plan developed for students whom need extra resources at school, but do not qualify for an IEP. It is managed by regular educators and is a plan that must be followed by law, so services cannot be brushed under the rug. An IEP definitely holds more "weight" in education, but a 504 Plan could be a good stepping stone if further services were to be needed in the future.
  • Thank you! Hoping to set up a meeting with her new teacher and will make sure to remember that!
