Pumping

My LO is 2 wks, and I am primarily breastfeeding her (she is cluster feeding right now). I started pumping once a day for supplement, and to build milk supply for when I return to work. I am only able to pump 1-3 ounces. Is this normal? Does it increase? Any tips to increase? Thanks!

Re: Pumping

  • I had an awful time trying to breast feed so right now I'm solely pumping and feeding him breast milk from a bottle. My advice to build up a supply would be to pump more than once a day. You will definitely have an increase over time too. I'm pumping every 4ish hours and sometimes can pump 8-10 ounces each time!

  • To build supply, hydrate and keep your boobies empty, pump and feed as offense possible.

  • I was told to pump at least 4 times a day
  • aligmclean -- I began pumping a few days ago, at 2 weeks, and produce 1oz at a time.
  • What I was told is to wait to pump because baby's feeding helps the milk supply get established. I was told that hand pumping to express or help with engorgement was perfectly fine on occasion. The amount you are getting though sounds perfectly normal. Baby's stomach is tiny right now so they don't drink very much at one time, but in a day they can drink up to a liter! Makes cluster feeding make more sense now.
