Recommend your monitor please!

I feel like we have about everything we need to get started after baby arrives, but we never bought or registered for a baby monitor. There were just too many choices and we had no idea what to get, still don't. I think we want video with a long range because we have a lot of property and I'd like to be able to go outside, etc. I would also like if it had an app or website I could use my smartphone to see baby and not just the monitor it comes with. Any suggestions?

Re: Recommend your monitor please!

  • We got a Motorola. It's a video monitor but does not connect to wifi/4G. I didn't want one that did that because I feel like if I can watch my baby from my phone, someone else can figure out how to do so, too. Just food for thought.
  • Loading the player...
  • I got the Summer Infant monitor originally but took it back cause the picture on it was terrible. I have the Motorola connect now and I LOVE it! The picture on it is awesome and it has an app that you can download to see the video from anywhere.
  • We have the non wifi Motorola one going on 3 years and it's ok. We have to mount it in the top corner of her room to see everything (Just since she's moved out of the crib) and the picture is not nearly as good but still good enough to see where she is.

As far as range goes, it works on our back deck but loses signal in our kitchen- I think there are more walls between her room and the kitchen- so it should work right outside your house but not much farther.
  • We have the Levana Astra and love it. No baby yet but we used it when our one year old nephew was here and sometimes we set it up and go outside to spy on the dogs antics. Box says it has a range of 750ft, we have tested to about 500ft and the picture and sound has been perfect.
  • Following. My husband lost a nephew to SIDs and is extremely anxious about LO eventually going to her room!
  • Angel care ... My brother died of SIDS so for all my nieces and and for my future son this is the monitor that brings us more rest

I'm sorry to hear about your brother! I am certainly going to look into this monitor and share this with my husband. Thoughts to you!
  • I was told to get drop cam, works off your wifi and even if you're away you can still get notified of movement on the camera. It's pretty cool... I will get one if/when I go back to work

But we are poor right now so I got the old fashioned kind vtech with no video :(
  • AngelCare, hands down. A video monitor is nice but movement detection is more important.

We used the AngelCare monitor ($90) with sound+movement until she got mobile enough to set off false alarms too much and by then SIDS was not a danger anymore so we left it on sound only and that worked great! Then when DD got her Big Girl Room we bought a Summer Infant video monitor for under $50 to keep an eye on her. The new baby will be using the AngelCare monitor in the crib.
  • Ours is Motorola. It's a video monitor with I think a 400 foot range. It tells you the temp in the room, plays music, and you can talk to baby through the parent unit. Not sure of the model number. We got it from Babies R Us. It's doesn't have a wifi feature but I didn't want that either Bc I've heard stories of people hacking into them and watching your kids.
  • I have the levana oma+ (new version of snuza) and a Motorola 2 way with temp detector, sound and it plays music. Plus my husband thinks we live in Fort Knox, so we have cameras outside and inside the house.
  • I did the Motorola with wifi. When I am at my office, I like to be able to keep an eye on things from my phone or iPad. I also have smart TVs all throughout my house so I am not worried about someone "peeking in" at us though the net. We have great lives, but would probably bore people after a while Lol
  • We got the Oricom Babysense2 + Secure710 Value Pack which has video and movement sensor.

I've been told the movement sensor will drive me mad but I'm happy to give it a go, my fear of losing a child to SIDS far outweighs the annoyance of being woken up at night for false alarms! In any event i think you can adjust the sensitivity settings etc so we'll give that a go.
  • I got the OCam, it came highly recommended and is compatible with all my wifi devices

i'm a techie, and my firewall keeps me safe from spies
  • I got the angel care due to the movement monitor for fear of SIDS. We got the version that has WiFi so we can view from our phone. The baby isn't here yet but it was very easy to set up, the picture is good, and the movement monitor works as well. You can also talk and play music through your phone which is neat i guess... My ONLY complaint is the camera is corded and the cord is a bit short so I will have to setup a tripod or something eventually. Other than that, it seems to do everything we want.
  • Bought a motorola with our first and it lasted 3.5yrs with no problems. I just replaced it with a new motorola.

  • @cosplaymom we have done the same thing! I also highly recommend both! We also bought the Snuza just for napping in the living room in her pack n play during the day since it's cordless. We haven't used it before, so we'll see! Otherwise Angelcare and Summer all the way!
  • Not tested with baby yet - we did test it without though...range seemed fine.  We got the AngelCare - video, sound and movement monitor.  It was a pain to intstall/set-up as the cord is short, but it's supposed to be a certain distance from the crib - makes no sense at all!!  We will be taping cords to the wall once the little one is big enough to reach through crib.  We had to put a floating shelf near the crib to get a view down into the crib (monitor is on the shelf).
