OMG I saw a video of a women in labor and she was in sooo much excruciating pain I'm so scared now I'm only 15 weeks but I had any type of pain!! I'm know I'm being a baby but what are some things I can do to ease labor pains? Should I exercise like yoga? That video totally freaked me out

Re: Scary

  • I hate any type of pain sorry typo

  • I did yoga and practiced breathing. It was painful, don't get me wrong, but I think the yoga helped me a little. I don't think that I looked like I was in excruciating pain, I wasn't yelling or anything.

I agree with others, if you are open to an epidural and you are that afraid of pain, do that. A birth, is a birth whether it's done naturally, with drugs or a CS. The end result is still a gorgeous baby in your arms so you do what you're comfortable with.

My motto was that no one died ever from the pain! But I had a relatively easy labour.

I got hooked into watching birth videos on YouTube. The more you watch, the more women you see actually pretty calm and quiet (NOT saying that it doesn't hurt). I asked my dads gf who's a midwife if it were common to be in THAT much pain. She said they RARELY get screamers and most often women just grunt when they push because, duh, you're trying to fit a baby out of a tiny hole.

If you want a good laugh, watch this one.

  • I have had 4 children.  3 with zero pains meds but not by choice.  Finally when I had my fourth the epidural was an option.  Let me tell you, the epidural is the single best thing ever invented.  The pain of natural childbirth is indescribable.  With the epidural, I could still move my legs, but felt NOTHING but pressure.  It.was.AMAZING!!!

My god, someone help that woman with her a$$!
  • Team epidural!  I would *maybe* consider med free if I knew I'd have a 5 hour experience from water breaking to delivering like my sister did.  But DD was 18 hours and DS was 14, so no freaking way.  I've heard of superwomen who have gone med free for DAYS!  Crazy!

    DD 12/20/99, DS 12/14/12, M/C 9/2014, M/C 1/2015

I'm planning on going drug free, so have been reading up on lots of coping mechanisms for labor. There's lots of good info out there that stress relaxation, position changes, movement during labor, water (tub or shower), massages, accupuncture, aromatherapy, etc. Just google natural pain relief in labor and have a read if you are interested. From what I understand these normally don't make things pain free, but make it more managable. I think even if you plan an epidural, having some ideas for early on, before you get it, isn't a bad idea, just to be prepared.
  • That poor woman hahaha. "GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF AND PUSH!" Her poor ass!
  • I don't have the balls to watch a birthing video yet. I plan on going natural, and I feel like if I see a lot of women losing their shit (literally and figuratively) during labor, it might kill my spirit a little.

No epidural for me either. My birthing center doesn't have that as an option. My boss (who just had her 4th a few weeks ago) said blissful ignorance was the best way to go if I'll just get freaked out and worked up over all the extra knowledge. I'm thinking she's right.
  • Yesterday I was having the 2 hour glucose test and I am so afraid of needles so the nurse poked me really bad and I screamed. The pregnant lady next to me was laughing ao hard and maybe me feel like a big baby. She was so rude. Not because I am pregnant it means I am no longer scared of pain right?! I am glad I am not the only one scared here
  • I'm one of the those people who has never feared pain. Don't get me wrong, I don't enjoy it, but I know that usually it will eventually end and I've learned that so much of it is mental. I've had quite a lot of injuries from competitive sports growing up and I usually just go to my happy place and breath. I'm taking a quick (4 weeks instead of 12) Bradley class with DH to give myself the best chance of a med free delivery. We'll see what happens!
  • My SIL is a self-proclaiming drama/pain queen. She would tell the entire world about every little symptom she had while pregnant. I was worried about her what her labor experience would be as was my MIL. From water breaking to the birth of her son was 6 hours. She fully intended to have an epidural, but decided not to. She didn't even shed a tear the entire time and was making jokes! Three pushes later, he was born.

You never know what to expect. Judging from my mom and sisters, I am hoping to stay under 48 hours! =)
  • My labor pains weren't so bad until they broke my water. That intensifies it but it was livable. I got the epidural at 3cm, and it was lovely. Didn't even hurt getting it.

I am a wimp about pain mainly from my anxiety. But you'd be surprised how much the human body just adapts. It does what it has to do, and you just have to remember that it's temporary.

  • I had an epidural with both kids, first was amazing and I did not feel a thing, second did not do anything. This time I plan to go pain med free because honestly, the last time when the epidural did nothing i realized that I can do it and if I don't get the epidural I have more freedom to move around. For me labor is not so much painful, just more uncomfortable until the very end.
  • I actually had to leave the room to throw up during our birthing class with my first child. The video of birth was too much.

Ask for any drug they have.
  • @jnshard I think one of the main reasons I'm hoping to go epidural-free is because of how much quicker you're able to get up and move around. Plus the birthing rooms at my hospital have tubs you can go in up until it's time to push so that will offset some of the pressure from contractions.

That woman with the ass pain was so funny! I mean, it sounds terrible, ass pain is the pits, but what an incredible Internet find.
  • So perfect! I can wait this kind of stuf getse pumped to do this.
  • @holocene - totally LOVE that video. I sent it to DH. It looks like if Wes Anderson directed a birth video lol
  • I'm totally up for the epidural if I need it. I think I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but I have zero tolerance for nausea. Are most people nauseous/vomitting throughout the experience?
  • Some people throw during labor some don't. I had an epidural and labor was okay. After was complicated and I threw up from all the drugs they pumped into me.

Imagine a birth video done by Wes Anderson!

The video was filmed by the lovely and incredibly talented Georgia! (Her IG is documentingdelight)
The beautiful Mama in the video is Amelia. (Her IG is amelia_hambrook )

  • I had my first without pain meds, not by choice, and my second with an epidural.

With the med free birth, the breathing was what got me through the labor. Take a class or read up on different breathing techniques that may help.

    Good luck!

  • I am trying to dig through youtube to find all of the births that aren't about fear or pain. These immensely helped me in preparation for my first born.

  • I just have to admit, those two water birth videos totally made me cry. I thought it was just pregnancy hormones but SO teared up as well:). I'm a FTM planning on a natural birth so I'm loving these helpful husbands! I know mine will be right there to help.
  • I had an epidural around 5cm with DD. I didn't feel like I needed one at that point but they were getting ready to switch anesthesiologists and it was recommended that if I was going to get one, the doctor currently on duty is who I wanted. It was bliss. I will definitely be getting another one. I had a second degree tear and I am so glad I didn't feel that happening lol
