New moms with Fibromyalgia

This is my first pregnancy, and I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia about 4 years ago.

With lots of trial and error I figured out the best way to keep the pain at bay which was working on my feet at a vets office and taking ibuprofen and tramadol.

Now that I'm pregnant, it is taking a serious toll on my overall health. I can't take ibuprofen anymore, so Tylenol is the replacement and it doesn't do anything. I just moved from NC to GA to be with my husband (he's U.S. Army Infantry and stationed in GA), and I haven't found a job, but now being soo sick and painful all over all the time I don't know how I could function in the work place like I used to. I had a very physically demanding job that also included being around anesthesia and radiographs, which I can't do anymore anyway. So I'm feeling pretty useless as I have worked since I was 14.

Any other moms out there battling with chronic pain who share in my feelings?

Re: New moms with Fibromyalgia

  • I don't have fibromyalgia but my mom does so I know what a toll the pain can take on you especially when you can't take anything for it. A friend of mine also has it and she's currently about 17 weeks pregnant. I don't see her too often so don't know too much about how she's handling the pain. Just wanted to offer some words of encouragement.. hang in there, it will all be worth it when you hold your little one in your arms!

  • I have fibromyalgia/CFS - diagnosed about 3yrs ago. I'm a shade over 20wks along and the aches and pains are picking up quite a bit.

I feel for what you're going through. It will all be worth it.

    Always happy to talk!
  • I have interstitial cystitis (IC) and IBS. IC is like crohns but in your bladder I guess. I use an herb that my OB approved that really helps. I highly suggest finding natural remedies you can run by your OB.
  • I have an auto-inflammatory condition that mimics a few other conditions (lupus, MS) but isn't actually any of them. I suffer from a lot of inflammation and bad joint pain, but it's hormone-driven so I am luckily less symptomatic during pregnancy. It is difficult because I can't do any of the usual things I would do to manage my pain, which includes prescription amounts of Advil, caffeine, overheating myself with hot showers and heating pads, and smoking the occasional cigarette.

I haven't figured out how to manage the pain I am still having, so I wish I could give you some advice! If staying active helps you, try to do so even if it's not by working. Hopefully you can find a job that will work out! Keep us posted.

  • I have psoriatic arthritis and was on NSAIDs, until we decided to try IVF again. I'm also one of the lucky ones who have a reduction in symptoms while pregnant, and if it's anything like last time for a few months post partum.
I teach kindergarten, so that keeps me active in the winter- which is my worst time. I have had a flare recently, but it's pretty minor. I've discovered that lavender essential oil is amazing for my skin symptoms, and I'm looking into trying some others once Bubbles is here.
For me, the most important thing is to stay active, hopefully we will be moving out of the cold weather and headed for the sunnier south. Both my skin and joint pain improve with better weather.
  • I so feel you! I have Fibro and am going through the AWFUL process of applying for permanent disability. I was doing ok in the beginning but now that I'm almost 24 weeks the pain is getting bad especially in my hips. I usually take gabapentin and tramidol daily but have only been able to take the gabapentin because we feared stopping might be too much. I'm allergic to Tylenol products so t's been pretty rough. My poor hubby tries to help by rubbing my back and hips but you all know the pain doesnt let go easy. I know it can be easy to get down and feel useless I've worked nonstop since I was 15 and it's been a hard time for me. The only thing that has gotten me through since March are Epson salt baths and crafts for the baby/nursery to keep my mind occupied. wish I could offer something that would help more.
  • I totally get you. I have CP and don't take anything at the moment. Everyone told me it is a lot better during pregnancy but actually it got worse. Can't bend my fingers in the morning and my back is killing me. Sadly, massage is also forbidden because it could induce labor.
I just hope it will be a bit better when LO is there!
  • I take Nuerotin (Gabapentin) and they allow it during pregnancy. Its non-narcotic.
