Ladies who already have little ones

If you did a registry with your first baby, was there anything you thought you needed, but didn't really use? I just don't want people to waste their money if we don't end up using something they get from the registry. TIA!!

  • We love our bottle warmer. We didn't get one at first but ended up buying on our own. Running hot water was a waste and it's nice to know exactly when bottle is ready.
We returned our bumbo. Never used it.
Wipe warmer was nice when baby was a newborn but was never used for that long.
Some items work for some people and don't work for others. Just try to keep boxes and/or keep receipts so you can exchange.
  • We never used a bottle warmer. We ended up returning it for more crib sheets. We did use our wipe warmer though until our DS was older.

  • The crib set was kind of a was kind of a waste. I recommend just getting crib sheets and blankets that go along with your theme. That what we will do with our next one! Also, make sure you get a diaper pail. We have one upstairs and I'm thinking about getting another one for downstairs since we will have twice the diapers now and we change them both up and down!!

It is so different for everyone and every kid! I never got a bottle warmer, my kids drank cold milk without complaint. Never had a wipe warmer. We also never had a diaper pail, just took diapers out to the trash. We used the bumbo a lot, but that is something you can buy used really cheap. Then each kid was so different too. DS loved to be swaddled so we bought several before DD was born, she hated it and never used them. Same with pacis and the swing, he loved them she didn't.

That is the nice thing about having a shower, you don't know what you will need so you can get a variety of stuff and try it out. Your family won't be wasting their money.
  • Never used the bumbo, it put him in a Weird position and wasn't helpful. He didn't like it either. He also didn't really like his bouncer but I know most kids do.
  • I used my bumbo pretty often. And for the 2-3 times I gave DS a bottle, I used the warmer. I'm not a big fan of wasting so I can't justify running hot water for a while to warm something up when I could just use a very small amount to do the same thing. But that's just me.
I agree with the poster that said that it's personal and you will use some stuff that others won't and even some babies might like things that others done. One baby might love the swing while the other loves the bouncer. Mine liked both but at different times. Your family won't be wasting their money, you'll most likely get good use from your items, especially if you plan to have more than one baby.
  • It's so hard to answer as its a personal thing for each family. We personally didn't have showers until after so didn't register. Thus went pretty minimalist.

Never used a wipe warmer, bottle warmer, crib set, or travel stroller system.

  • I always ask questions to moms when I'm at target "window shopping" the baby section, and I've heard the same thing about the bumbo seats and wipe warmers. DH wants a wipe warmer for himself now though lol
  • It's different for everyone. We loved the bumbo! And I used it for both my kids for quite a while. I never used my bottle warmer. I did use the wipe warmer only issue I found with that was when we weren't home and I used a wipe from the pack DS would freak out cuz it was cold compared to what he was used too. Diaper genie NEVER got used.
  • I never used a bottle warmer the protector that goes in shopping carts or wipe warmer sometimes I used the diaper genie but I think only because I had it and felt guilty if I didn't use it.
  • When registering, I went crazy asking my mommy friends (and quite possibly every mom in the store that I ran across) for their opinion. Personally, I found bottle warmers and wipe warmers a waste, considering I wouldn't have them on outings. Cold wipes in public when you're used to warm wipes at home seems like it would be even more of a shock. I haven't used the bumbo much, but am going on vacation next weekend and will take it with me for feeding as I may not have access to a high chair in the hotel. Baby shoes were completely useless. My son has gigantic feet and wouldn't leave them on anyway. He's almost 8 months old and is just now, occasionally, wearing shoes.

Loves our rock n play and my ergo. Register for nursing supplies. Lanolin for your nipples, breast pads for your bra, storage baggies, etc. The Sophie was expensive, but absolutely worth it. Love our ubbi diaper pail. I couldn't get enough sleepers with the snaps, receiving blankets, Velcro swaddlers, or the gerber cloth diapers(for burp cloths). I also got a little basket of toys which was awesome and this toy saved our lives in the car for like four months.

Didn't use bottles (i would buy those yourself as you may need to try one at a time until you find one you like), would never have used a bottle warmer even if I did, didn't use a bumbo. Crib sets are a waste of money, it's cheaper to buy pieces you like (and looks better, I think).

    We rarely used our Boppy.
We did buy a Momma-roo swing. Loved it! Worth every penny!

We loved the bumbo. Used it all the time. But we were also given a used one it by a mom who said she tried it once and never used it again. DS loved to sit up and watch what was going on. And we took it to BIL's house instead of a high chair when DS was little enough. (family dinner almost every week).

Never had a wipe warmer. Seems super silly to me. Never had a bottle warmer. I felt like there were other things I'd rather have people spend money on. And other things I'd rather put my money towards that I actually needed. We had six or seven crib sheets. Would have been fine with 4. Shoes are mostly useless until baby is walking.

    Edited because typos.
  • We registered for a bouncy seat, which DD hated!!! It took 3 purchases to find the right one. She was a colicky little nightmare back then.

We used all the things we register for but we didn't register for anything extravagant. No warmers or diaper genies.

We didn't use the Tupperware bowls as much as we thought.

  • Interesting to see all the differing views of each products. While the baby didn't like the bumbo, she plays with, and sits in all the time now as a almost 2 year old. We used the wipes warmer constantly. Our DD could tell with non warmed wipes, she squirmed as if she was uncomfortable. We use a diaper genie all the time. Never had a bottle warmer because DD EBF. Or husband warmed with water in a mug and stuck frozen pumped milk in that. Didn't use the swing as much as I would have liked or playpen, but now with number 2, going to try again, so I'm glad to have it. Our DD didn't wear bibs, but again, going to try with this one. We got a microwave sterilizer and bottle rack dryer, I think these are must haves, even with dishwasher use. We loved swaddleme wraps! And a lighter musical mobile was very useful up to 1 year! So I guess I'm pretty much happy with everything! And love that I have it all for this one. However, we did buy most of these because at our shower I got several lotion/soap gifts and onesies. So I guess those items are considered big ticket nowadays.
  • I never had a wipe warmer, I figured a winter baby should get use to cold wipes for when we were out and about. I got a hand me down bumbo but didn't really use it because I was told it sits them in an unnatural position (feet above butt) that doesn't help with normal sitting development. I would recommend buying swings and bouncers 2nd hand, luckily I did because my daughter didn't like the swing and those things are expensive. Like others have said it really depends on the baby and family.
  • We loved the bumbo. Its small and portable and we took it everywhere. We didn't use a wipe or bottle warmer, or the diaper genie. But it was on a different level of our living room so it wasn't very accessible if I didn't want to go upstairs for a quick change. We also didn't use the crib set or diaper holder. Every baby is different if they like a swing or bouncer. My oldest 2 loved the swing but my littlest hated it but loved the bouncer. I agree with everyone, alot depends on personal preference and your lifestyle. :)
  • The answers will be all over the board because it really is just what works for you and your particular baby's preference, which can change from baby to baby. DD hated the swing and DS loved it. Never used the boppy (preferred regular pillows), Bumbo, bottle warmer, wipe warmer, or crib set.

  • As a nanny I can share with you what the one month old that I take care of does and doesn't use a lot.

    Daily use:
-pack n play (downstairs diaper changing station and also stores most of her necessities)
    -swaddling blankets
    -burp cloths
    -boppy

    Sporadic use:
-swing (sometimes she'll use it and sometimes she won't. It was too expensive for how little it gets used)
-bottle warmer (only used when we remember to pre make bottles that get refrigerated)
    -bibs
    -baby carrier

    Never used:
-diaper genie (we use grocery bags)
    -any clothes that aren't onesies
-stroller (maybe it'll get more use when she gets a little older)
  • It depends on your personal lifestyle. I'm a stay at home mom with a can do attitude. We passed on bottle warmers, wipe warmers, swaddlers, diaper pails, and crib sets. With this being our second we are even passing up on full bumper guards, bouncy chair and walkers. We did use our Bumbo a ton and it really helped our little one, with severe preemie needs, to learn a better sitting posture sooner. Instead of diaper pails we went with a scent blocker trash sack in our regular garbage can and in the little can that sat in his room, we just emptied the cans every evening.
Every parent and child is different. Best advice I ever got is to keep ALL receipts and NEVER open anything until you feel you have a need for it that nothing else you will work for.
And yes, boogie wipes are glorified baby wipes, so are pacifier wipes. Go with your gut and you'll do fine!
  • Never used a wipe warmer, I put the wipe inside my shirt while I was getting the diaper and baby ready (it actually felt nice on my sore boobs). Never had a bottle warmer. I didn't like the open bottom gowns because I was scared her feet were going to get cold. Didn't get a crib set until she was a year old. We used the bumbo some, but not enough to spend more then $15 on one. We used the swing daily. We still use the diper genie, but we use trash bags instead of the expensive refills. We used the soothies brand pacifiers only. We used the automatic bouncer some. The walker was great. I hated the jogging stroller, the cheap one was just fine. We used cloth dipers instead of burp cloths. Never used paci wipes or boggie wipes. Used my boppy pillow all the time. Loved my baby carrier but make sure you get a good one, I had 3 and only 1 was comfortable for me and baby. We winded up using Dr. Browns bottles and then cheap bottles after 9 months, hopefully I only have to breastfed this time.
  • I LOVE my bottle warmer.
I bought WAY too many swaddle blankets.
I would pass on the boogie and pacifier wipes for sure.
    ❤️
  • Never registered for a swing, bottle warmer, wipes warmer, and a whole lot of other stuff and didn't miss it. He also had a closet full of clothes he hardly ever wore.
  • Never used wipe warmer, just help a wipey or two in my fist while I got DD undressed and diaper off. They were warm enough by then. Never used a bottle warmer, just had a container we filled with hot water and let bottle sit in it for a minute or two. Feel in love with a crib set that was discontinued and searched around online forever until I found it. Never used it. One thing I used all the time that I hear a lot of people say they didn't was a changing table.
