Introducing Formula to a breastfed baby

My Baby is 1 month old, He's been on breastmilk since birth. But due to my arthritis I need to go back on medication which means I can't breastfeed. He drinks about 3 1/2-4 oz every 2-3 hrs. How can I introduce him to formula? Little by little ? And how much oz of formula would he need? I know formula is thicker than breastmilk

Re: Introducing Formula to a breastfed baby

  • We did 1/2 breast milk be 1/2 formula...she was on it that for about 1 week and then we switched completely to formula. She was in the NICU though and my production slowed down. But I am sure it is like introducing anything new. Slowly introduce the new thing. So maybe 1 oz formula and the rest Breast milk for a couple days, then 2 oz formula and then 3 and then pretty soon all. Good luck! And I would definitely talk to your pediatrician about it also :)

  • I am going through the same thing and I began just doing one feeding a day with formula. We do half what she would do with breastmilk and if we saw that she was still hungry we give her a little more. Hope this helps, I know how hard it is to stop breastfeeding LO.
  • So if he drinks 4 oz of breastmilk , I'll be giving him 4oz of formula too?
