Episiotomy - help

Hi all. I'm a FTM. I had a long/traumatic(!) labour - babe was sunny side up, pushed for 4/5 hours, used vacuum a few times unsuccessfully, etc. No pain meds. Dr cut me quite bad to get him out in the end.

This is only day 4, but it is so painful to walk/stand up/sit. Is this normal? Any tips? How do I know If it's split open? Thanks

Re: Episiotomy - help

  • I had one as well 6 days ago although my labour wasn't as bad. I think if you just keep resting and take some ibuprofen throughout the day it will get better. Try not to overdo it. I felt great yesterday and cleaned the house. Today I was in some pain. It is getting better though. I also started taking warm baths with Epsom salts for 25 minutes a day.

  • I had 3rd degree tear and got a lot of stitches. I'm 11 days pp now and am still sore. I took ibuprofen all day long for at least the first week. I'm down to taking it only once a day now. I'm sitting on pillows and trying to stand up and walk around (even if just to the bathroom) once an hour or once every 2 hours. Padcicles helped the first few days as well
  • I have strong pain meds, but today they didn't touch the pain. I'm thinking maybe I overdid it too (went to mall).
  • I tore in 3 places and it hurt for the first 10 days. Today is day 16 and it still hurts but not nearly as bad. Over doing it makes things worse. I went to the grocery store thinking that wasn't anything too bad and paid the price in pain the next day. Take it as easy as you can.
  • I had an episiotomy and third degree rectal tearing with my first baby. It took about a week to feel a little better, 2 weeks to feel quite a bit better and a month to feel normal.

Take your meds, sit on a Boppy if you have one and take it as easy as possible. Hope you feel better soon!
  • Rest, witch hazel wipes, benzocaine, ibuprofen and no heavy lifting or stress. You could also do a sitz bath.
  • Thanks all. It feels like it's going to take a while.
Dr said no baths - which I thought was normal at the time but as people keep recommending baths I'm wondering why I can't have one, would love to!
  • Sitz bath is different from a real bath, as it's just for your bottom. My doc said no baths but sent me home from the hospital with the sitz bath. I haven't tried it yet but know others have said it helps a lot. Call your doc and ask about it.
