3 day vs 5 day transfer

Hello there. I'm 43 and had a beautiful now 3 year old through IVF at 40. My husband and I are doing the 1st of 2 IVF attempts and round 1 yielded 1 fertilized embryo.

Since we had our first most places now seem to recommend a 5 day transfer. I had to change from my original practice for insurance reasons but my original doctor strongly encouraged a 3 day transfer since if we wait until 5 we may not have anything to transfer. My new doctor was horrifyingly rude today and said that with just one it really didn't matter if we did 3 or 5 day and we just needed to decide and make an appointment. I asked if she would talk to my husband to answer any medical questions about the difference and she told me she was really busy with 15 things to do and didn't have time. She goes on vacation tomorrow. Mind you this was a phone call that lasted less than 3 minutes.

With just one (it only takes one!) we are going ahead with 3 day - partly with the thinking that if it wouldn't make it in the lab until 5 days at least we will have tried.

Looking for any words of wisdom and support. Super stressed out.

    I honestly don't know anything about that part of the process since I haven't gotten that far yet... but I will gladly offer my support and say GOOD LUCK to you!  Yes, it only takes one to make your dream come true.  Maybe try for a second opinion if you feel neglected by your doctor... that is just rude and unprofessional... are there any other doctors in the practice to talk to?  Anyway, that is my best advice but I want to wish you the best and I hope you have a great outcome.

    I do not know much about the difference honestly.  I know my RE has only mentioned 5 or 6 day, but that doesn't mean much.  I just wanted to wish you good luck!!!

    2 clomid cycles, 3 hybrid clomid/bravelle IUI's = 4 BFN/1 CP@ 5.5 weeks
    IUI #6 -Follitism IUI cycle converted to IVF and back to IUI-4 mature, 3 maybe mature = BFP!!   DS Born 9/2014
    TTC#2 
    IVF #1 9/15 Antagonist- 19 R 1F (Frozen day 1 @ 2PN stage) Diagnosed with SER aggregates in 13/19 eggs after failed fertilization
    IVF #2 11/15 Antagonist w/ICSI  (Higher stims & Letrosole added last minute on stim day 7)- 39R, 24M (20/24 SER free), 15F (14/15 SER free & all frozen @ 2PN stage) 
    FET#1 Cultured all 16- 2pn embryos to day 5- transferred 1 good hatching blast and 1 early blast on 1/28- None to freeze - beta 2/5

    That doesn't seem very helpful at all. What a crap doctor....I would go with your gut. If you really loved your last doctor then stick with what he recommended, and do the three day transfer. I don't have any advice to give you other then to follow your instincts. Good luck!

    I agree with everyone else, your RE should not treat you so poorly.

    There are benefits to both a 3 and 5 day transfer.

    Individual clinics definitely have their preferences.
