Ikea Hacks

Anyone doing fun ikea hack projects for the nursery? I got sucked into the vortex of hack pics on Pinterest and there are some great ideas! Today the hubby and I hacked a dresser, to see if we could. It came out pretty dang good, if I do say so myself! We are going for a rustic modern nursery for our twin boys.

Re: Ikea Hacks

  • Cute! It's not ikea, but a friend and I are determined to hack aden+anais blankets because I think spending $40 on 3 thin cotton blankets is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. :)

  • I don't know if it counts as a hack, but we use the IKEA picture shelves as book shelves in our girls' room. I have seen it done with spice racks as well. It just creates a front-facing bookshelf space, which is good for kids choosing their own books and keeping them handy on the wall next to our reading chair.

We ended up getting a regular book shelf as well because I am a bibliophile with a serious book addiction and children's books are my drug of choice lately.

Love that!!! I am thinking of doing the spice shelves for books too!! :)
  • @LC122 I used to work at IkEA and I know you gotta be careful with shelves as some of them have very specific weight limits, so when you over pack them they tend to fall ;)

Yeah, the picture shelves aren't deep enough to hold too many books anyway and children's books are pretty lightweight - most weigh less than framed pictures, so it works out.
That is also why we ended up getting a regular bookshelf. Even my not-yet-2-yr-old can recognize her favorite books by the spine and the not-yet-4-yr-old is getting into chapter books. We still like the look of having some of our favorite picture books front-facing on the wall shelves though.

I've even seen people decorate their nurseries with a sort of storybook theme or classic books theme and combine their favorite books with a stuffed animal on a picture shelf - like a Winnie the Pooh book and plush or Dr. Seuss book and Cat in the Hat plush.

I have several IKEA hacks I plan to do but not yet completed.  Guess I'll have to update based on how they actually turn out! :)  I attached some pictures of my inspiration.

    1) Ikea Bekvam spice racks into bookshelves hack. I  purchased 5 of them at $3.99 each last weekend.  I am going to paint the racks coordinating nursery colors and maybe attach some pretty scrapbook paper to the inside bottom for a little added pattern to the shelves.

    2) I ended up buying 2 of the Raskog carts last weekend for $29.99 each.  One I am going to use in my craft room but the other will make a great diaperchanging/breastfeeding supply station for the nursery.  Best part is the cart is on wheels! I bought one in ivory and one in gray but not sure which one I want to use for the baby's room yet.  I've thought about painting part of them, but at the very least I'll line the cart with fabric or paper/modgepodge liner for another fun look.

    3) I have an Ikea Billy bookshelf I purchased like 8-9 years ago that I plan on repainting and putting in the room.....you guessed it, I will put either fabric or paper along the back of it too.

@leeleepi Your dresser turned out amazing!!  I was thinking of buying one like that too but we are moving and I've already accumulated enough baby crap that my husband told me any more and the movers will probably not honor our initial quote [-X.  So I think I'll buy a used one from craig's list and just repaint/reknob that one.
  • Looks great, you guys did such a good job!! The most I ever do is change the knobs to give the furniture more character, I love how the paint &a stain turned out.
  • Nice job on the hack!!!

I have one of those big wardrobes from IKEA. I need to hack it into a one big dresser for DS's room. I'd have to show pics to show what I'm doing. It's hard to explain.

  • Looks great @leeleepi ! I'm thinking about going that route for my two year olds dresser. She will be getting a big girl room and my December lo is getting her crib and furniture.

Thanks!! I saw some really sweet girl ones that were white win metallic gold legs and gold knobs. :) I say go for it! Worst case scenario you don't like it and sand it down and start over.

So sweet thanks! We did weathered grey stain and then a more walnut color stain on top! It was super fast to do too. It took my husband the longest to put it together, because it's IKEA and well their instructions take a rocket scientist to figure out- all in 144 easy steps! LOL.

Thanks!! :) I really wanted this West Elm dresser but it was upwards of $1500 - so we thought let's try a hack before we spend that on a dresser our boys will inevitably destroy with crayons in the coming years.

Ours looks darker but I took the photo at sunset so the shadows make it look darker then it is :). With supplies and everything it was only $175!

Next up we're going to try making an ikea coffee table into a barn reclaimed wood coffee table. We are going to need all the luck we can get. Haha!
If you want my opinion I think yours looks BETTER than the $1500 one. You did an amazing job!!
  • @rgz where did you get your cube organizer/changing table? I've been looking everywhere for one that has the depth to fit the changing pad!
  • You did an amazing job @leeleepi I love the way it turned out! @rgz I just bought the rolling cart this weekend for the same thing! DH just assembled it and I am lovingg it!

Unfortunately that table isn't mine...I just included that picture to show what I was going to use the cart for. Sorry I can't help you!
  • Not from ikea, but I really wanted the Pottery Barn Camo Dresser in navy blue.

This was way to expensive so I found a solid wood dresser used on Craigslist. Hubby fixed it up and I painted. I love how it turned out. This was about a 2 hour job and we spent less than $100 including paint and supplies. image

  • We have some talented ladies on the D15 board! @leeleepi and @Holdmomma those dressers look great! I have been wanting to try an IKEA hack for sometime and if I can convince DH maybe I'll just go for it. I like this one from Centsational Girl.

  • You did a great job! I have so many IKEA hacks pins that I want to try. I'm planning on doing a dresser hack and turning it into a buffet. We custom stained an old oak table and I want something to completely match it. We purchased the HEMNES dresser for our nursery and just changed the knobs. Looking to purchase the same dresser for our guest bedroom but purchase overlays to give it a more expensive look.

That dresser is adorbs!! It's just a little paint then they added molding to the front. They probably glued it on with liquid nails :) you can bet raw molding for 59cents and just paint it. Home Depot will cut it for you too!
