How much is your newborn sleeping?

Baby girl is 4 days old. She is a huge sleepyhead! I make sure to wake her every 2-3 hours for feeding and changing, and she will look at us with her beautiful eyes for 10-15 minutes before conking back out. She is sleeping 2-3 hour stretches at night as well and giving us plenty of poopy/wet diapies, so I'm not overly concerned, just curious about other moms' experiences with their LOs!

Re: How much is your newborn sleeping?

  • Newborns do sleep a lot, typically. They need it for growth and development. In a few more weeks, she'll start staying awake a little more and it'll progress from there.

Thanks for the reassurance! I'm also being a little selfish because I love when her little face focuses on mine and just stares haha. Looking forward to more of that interaction!

  • My LO sleeps in long stretches -- 2-3 hours at a time day and night.  We usually go to sleep at 11pm and wake up between 9am and 11am; she'll wake up ~3 times during that 'night time' period.

I'm also looking forward to the time when she's more alert!  12 days old now.

I wonder, How often do your LOs cry?  Hazel hardly ever cries!!  She did when she had her foot pricked for the PKU but that's about it.  Otherwise, she's all grunts and groans.
  • 10 days old here. She will sleep for 2-3 hours at a time during the day usually. She will have one 4 hour long period, usually from 11pm to 3am where she is awake and wants to nurse on and off the whole time.
  • My daughter is awake from 11 to 3am too...make it stop lol
  • My 8 day old girl is much the same. Sleepy all the time, most awake in the afternoon (thankfully it's not in the wee hours!)
  • My three week old will wake up every 3-4 hours at night to eat then go back to sleep. When he was super newborn he would go every 2-3 hours every night
  • Aw. My baby is 5 weeks old now.. She goes thru phases of sleeping all the time, and staying awake.. Just yesterday she was awake all day! She took 2 half hour naps. That's it.. But she was in such a good mood so I just enjoyed her awareness.. And today she's slept all day. But she barely ever cries and when she does its cause she's hungry.
  • DD is five days old, yesterday she was awake for about an hour and a half from about 8 am-9:30 am. Other than that we have to wake her for all feeds and diaper changes which while "awake" she would still keep her eyes shut through. She is a sleepy baby, but we're enjoying this relatively peaceful stage.
  • Reading all your comments makes me think I need to talk to my baby's doctor now. He is nine days old and sleeps about 6-7 hours at a time. I try to wake him up to eat but he just doesn't want to.

Yes call the doctor! I was told newborns sleep 2-3 hours at a time, 4 hours at absolute most between feedings. If baby is too sleepy to eat and is sleeping 7 hours at a time I would definitely call the doctor just to make sure all is ok.
  • ^ I second that. Better safe then sorry
  • I'm jealous. My baby does about 2 of those 2-3 hour naps and the rest of the time he's feeding, then passes out on the boob. The moment I try to set him in the bassinet or sleeper he wakes up. I've been getting about an hour to 3 hours of sleep myself. I'm just exhausted.
  • My doctor said sleep patterns will extend once baby is over 10 lbs. My daughter does 3-4 hour stretches now that she is 10.8 lbs. She is exclusively breast fed.
  • I've read that newborns can sleep up to 16 hrs a day... My little guy pretty much sleeps after every feeding to the next. Hrs up for about 10 min or so to eat... He is 1w3d
