January 2016 Moms

Lost My Job :-(

I lost my job yesterday and today is my birthday :-( Our entire company got shut down as our project was terminated. My bosses ensures me they will me find a great job but at the moment I'm still scared and upset.

I'm 13 weeks 3 days and 29 years old, and afraid of how hard it will be to get a job just because I'm pregnant. Unfortunately my husband's income won't be enough to support our family so I need to find work quickly. I'm also dreading how bored I'll be when I'm on unemployment. I probably will try to volunteer a lot to keep myself busy as I try to find a job.

Any advice ladies? Part of me wonders if I should just take a temp job between now and January? Do I try to get a full time job? Do I stay on unemployment until after the baby and then try to get back into the work force (this scenario I would probably lose my mind as I love to stay busy with projects).

Any words of wisdom or advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Lost My Job :-(

  • I agree that unfortunately you may have a hard time finding employment when they know you'll be on leave for a few months. Employers can't discriminate on that solely. But it's not hard for them to choose a candidate over you that's not pregnant, you can't prove you didn't get hired because you're expecting.
I feel like I would file for unemployment and during that time get some projects done at home that are on the to-do list. That to-do list never really ends right? Or is that just mine?
Spend a handful of hours a week searching for jobs that would be a step up from your last job. If you get an interview, go in and see if there is an opportunity. If you don't find anything better, and can afford to live off the unemployment until after baby, don't be hard on yourself. You know you'll go back into the the workforce.

  • My job is considering hiring a 7 mo preggo lady because she would be a great fit for the position. Even though the timing of her being out would be during our busiest season which will such for everyone else for a few months. Have confidence in your talents and worth and interview for new jobs! You never know!
    Good luck!

I agree with @apinkpelican - have confidence in your talents and abilities. I think I've read one or two other threads where some mamas on here successfully landed new jobs recently. I know it can be a scary situation, pregnant or not, but hang in there and try not to stress too much. Best of luck to you!
  • I was hired at my current job when I was 13 weeks pregnant. I didn't tell them that I was expecting and they still don't know. You do not have to disclose that you are pregnant and legally you do NOT have to. Wear loose clothes and start interviewing ASAP!! I was in a similar situation and it took me three weeks to find a job. I am not working as a paralegal (which is what I do) but more as a legal assistant. The pay is not as good, BUT it's still a job and absolutely better than nothing. Plus your company shut down and so you have a valid excuse to be looking for a new job. I quit mine before I knew I was pregnant and that was such a bad idea!! Get your reference letters together. Physically CALL places to see of they are hiring. Get the HR directors contact info and email them directly. Get a qualified friend to review your resume. PM me if you need anymore help :). Also call recruitment agencies and start setting up appointments :). You can do this!
  • I just got a new job at 17wks but I did not tell them I am pregnant. (you are under no obligation to tell them) personally I'm waiting to tell until after the anatomy scan and am just going to tell her that I didn't want to tell anyone other than family before that scan.
  • First of all, Happy Birthday!!!

But what a crappy time to lose your job.  I'm so sorry to hear this! I think the PPs have great advice. If you think that you'll be crazy bored staying home until the baby is born than I think trying to find a job is a good idea.
  • Thanks ladies for all of the advice, really appreciate it. I've started to reach out to a bunch of different companies and my bosses have been reaching out to folks on my behalf
As well. I'm thinking during the interview process that I would want them to know when I'm pass my first/second meeting with any prospective employer. Just feel that it might be better to be honest so that they are open to working with me on terms when I return to work (ie the ability to work from home one day week, and starting back part-time). Thoughts?
  • There are like 4 or 5 other posts on similar topics. If you search those you can see what other ladies did. I have posted in those a bunch. I started a new job two weeks ago around 12 weeks pregnant. I disclosed to them once I got two or three interviews in and they were great about it. Now I don't have to tiptoe around it at work which is nice. I just feel like it's more respectful to them and I'd rather find out now than when I'm 9 months pregnant that they're not going to give me leave or something.

  • I would continue to look for a new job as you are still early on and have at least 6 months of work before the baby comes. Definitely continue to pursue unemployment in case it takes a bit to find a job. Considering your previous employers are putting in a good word for you I don't think you will have a problem finding something soon.

    And happy birthday!
  • Any chance you were on the Inventiv contract??

I just want to share, my company has hired 3 obviously pregnant womwn in the last year and a half. I will be there less than a year before I go on maternity leave. They look for quality candiates, and would rather have someone out for a couple months, then hire the wrong person. I will not yet qualify for FMLA, my supervisor told me not to worry about at all, my job would be waiting on me.

    Good luck.
