So my first meeting with my new doctore went well. We talked about my birth plan and how I was having some nervousness about birth in a hospital with a doctor rather then having a midwife like I did with my first. (STM- low risk, no midwifes on the island)
We talked about all the important things and then I was off.
I started to think over the past week, I have all theses wants and don't wants and know the birth I want but what is my doctors birth plan???
So yesterday at my appointment I asked him to tell me about his birth plan/ how he would be assisting in my delivery of my baby in both ideal and emergency situation.
He looked stumped.... He said he had never been asked this question.
He took a few mins and then proceeded to tell me he was very much a hands off doctor, unless the mother requested hands on or circumstances required it. he went in to depth about several situations.
We talked about cord cutting and meconiumabd having baby checked out while still delaying cord cutting. We talked about pushing and Episiotomies vs tearing and his rate of cutting.
After all my questions and stumping the doctor a few more times. he told me in all his years of being a doctor he's never been asked about his birth plan/ his perspective on birth. I am so happy I found this doctor considering that I just switched to him at 35 weeks because my OB was not on board with my birth plan and she wouldn't even be the one delivering my baby unless I had a caesarean.
Re: Stumped the doctor by asking about what his birth plan was.
With my last birth my midwife and I talked in great length about her role and her plan as a part of my birth. But I am finding more and more that doctors either don't get questioned enough or just at all about how they are a part of the birth. I was seen by my family doctor till 28 weeks, then seen 2 times by an OB that wasn't even the one who was going to deliver my baby ( not asked in thoses two visit about a birth plan) and then Switched to a family practice that delivers baby's and found the doctor really stumped by all my questions.
He was really taken back and had to think. It was kinda nice to see him be humble and say he didn't know how to answer because he had never been asked. Too often I think doctors are treated as the end all be all when really they are just people like us.
I am So happy to have found a doctor I am beginning to trust
