Formula

Which formula have you had luck with? I'm currently supplementing and haven't had luck finding one that doesn't cause gas or constipation

Re: Formula

  • My baby has a very sensitive tummy. She's almost EBF but the few times we have given her formula it's Enfamil Gentlease. We have had no issues with it!
  • My little man alternates between breast milk and formula. We use Gerber gentle. He had really bad gas and constipation with Enfamil so we tried gerber and it works wonders. The Enfamil we had to use was for preemies though so I'm not sure how the regular infant one would have made him. He no longer has gas pains and poops regularly now though.

@thumper90 thank you! A friend of mine had both of her kids on Gerber gentle as well. She had recommended that one to me as well and said the same thing! I think I'm going to try that one.
I've tried the Infant Enfamil which gave him the worst gas his stomach was stiff as a board and then the Nutramigen which he shivers and makes a ughh gross sound after eating it, the Spit up one to also help his reflux issues which he also gets medicine for but that was hard on his stomach as well and he still continues to spit up a lot it's shocking to my friends who have children! So I put him on Similac soy and cut dairy out of my diet as well thinking that would at least help with his gas but that makes him constipated and he still gets gassy & it's painful for him so we aren't even sure if that was the issue! I give him the milicon (Simethicone) and sometimes gripe water for the gas and that helps for the moment but doesn't help the constipation when eating the soy formula and I would ebf but I'm always struggling with my milk supply and I've tried everything to help that! We're finally going to see a pediatric GI specialist tomorrow morning so maybe they will help! Goodness these poor little guys & their tummy issues!! Thanks for the feedback!
  • Oh yes my poor little guy had such a terrible time with it. I used the colic drops when he would get gas. They were given to me by his pediatrician and it actually helped but he stayed constipated until we switched formulas. I'm glad I could help. Nothing worse than seeing your LO in pain and feeling helpless about it. I have been having issues with my breast milk supply as well. I got kidney stones and couldn't pump right for a week and ever since I'm making hardly any and it was stressing me out. So glad I have this formula now though!
  • Also, I use the Up & Up Target brand gentle when my LO has a bout of tummy troubles. It does well and is very affordable!
  • We had to go from similac sensitive to enfamil gentlease. Now we use nutramagin. Life saver
  • We use Similac Sensitive Tummies but my baby still got constipated. I have her regulated with 1 oz (half water half prune juice) every other day and karo syrup in the morning bottle every day. It took about 2 months for her to be totally regulated but still on the same routine. Good luck!
  • On Thursday, we met with a Pediatric GI and she switched him to Gerber gentle and told me to give him Gerber colic probiotic drops daily. So far, he's been so much happier and less tummy pain!! Fingers crossed this works :)
  • Similac also has a formula for Supplementing.  I used this with my first after going 10 months EBF.  I never had to deal with the constipation though, just a bit of gas.  I would use the gas drops and bicycle his legs to fart him.
  • I just came across this - how is baby? Did the Gerber formula work better? I take a magnesium drink called Calm, it is a raspberry lemon flavor and tastes great, and it is the only thing that keeps me regular. Sometimes if I don't have it for a few days I notice my LO has fewer and fewer dirty diapers. I am pretty convinced I have a magnesium deficiency. But when I take it again he has a good dirty diaper. It's natural and my midwives approved it. The full serving is less than 100% daily recommended dose for magnesium and I only take 1/4 the full dose (you start small and work your way up to whatever is the best for you). Anyway thought I would pass that along! Also, I have also struggled with supply, things that worked for me were fenugreek (3 capsules 3x per day), Gatorade, Greens on the Go by ItWorks!, and lactation cookies. I use a recipe called "the best damn lactation cookies you'll ever have" and they are!!! I have to pace myself or I gain weight bc I eat so many lol. They are basically oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with old fashioned oats, brewers yeast, and flaxseed meal. I believe the brewers yeast is what does it! But they are great and I definitely notice a change in my supply when I take them, I try to eat 1 cookie after each feeding so over the next 3 hrs it builds my supply. Some people say to drink beer, it's bc of the brewers yeast. I never felt comfortable with that, but if you like beer I know someone who would just sip from a beer throughout the day and she swore it worked. Hope baby is thriving and gas free! :)

Thank you very much!! Sorry for the late reply, I just saw your post!! I make those booby bites which are I think the same as the cookies you mentioned - they're so good!! I also put Brewers yeast in my smoothies in the morning and I'm taking Alf Alfa 3 3x a day and fenugreek 3 3x a day together which helps my supply to keep up the nursing especially at night! Also, we learned he is indeed lactose and tolerant and his tummy doesn't react well to breast milk when I eat eggs. He started to develop a little bit of eczema on his legs, around his knees when we switched to the gerber gentle ease and had the worst tummy issues. I don't have any dairy at all anymore or eggs which has helped with his tummy while I'm nursing and we put him back on the similac soy and just give him 1-2ounces of prune juice every few days to help with the constipation. The pediatric GI also switched his acid reflux medication to a different brand and less dosage which had helped tremendously. I also find the probiotics are helping his tummy as well!! Thank you for the feedback and support!

  • I'm using Enfamil for Supplementing (light green lid) because I'm still breastfeeding my boy. He does wonderfully with it! The only down side to this formula is that you can't get the big refill boxes, you have to buy the tubs.
  • Earths Best for sensitivity is my baby's favorite. Others smelled way too fishy and he rejected them completely. Earths Best is sweet like breastmilk and is all organic.
