Breastfeeding

Struggling to breastfeed my 2 week old. I do not have enough flow which gets frustrating for my daughter. I have been giving her formula and the breast milk that I accumulate during the day she gets that. I rented a pump from the hospital and have also seen a lactation nurse several times. I really want to breastfeed but I just don't have enough. Any suggestions?

  • No suggestions but I'm in the exact same boat

  • Lactation cookies, fenugreek, oatmeal. Only give her the formula after a feed at the breast, make sure she's on there every 3 hours from beginning of one feed to beginning of next, bare minimum! If she wants to be on there every hour, let her!
  • I had the same problem! My LO didn't catch on until about 3 weeks. He would get frustrated and pull away and would hardly latch on. I kept with it and put him to the breast throughout the day.

I also tried giving him some formula to calm him down then would switch to the breast. It took a lot of time and was definitely frustrating but so worth it!

    Breastfeeding is hard!
Stick with it if it's right for you! You can do it!!!

How often are you feeding the breast milk? The best thing to increase your flow is feed whenever your baby wants it. The more you give that breast, the more your body ups its supply. Drink a ton of water. My baby is 6 days old and my left breast just started to produce milk. I just kept offering it to him so it would let down that milk.
  • No personal experience, but a friend swore by " Mother's Milk" tea (I think it's more of a specialty food store item/order online, not typical grocery store item). Might be something worth researching or running by a lactation consultant/doctor. Good luck!
  • I'm having the same issue. My LC suggested breast feed first, then supplement with formula and end the session by pumping any milk left and she told me to massage my breasts to try to coax anything still in there too. She also suggested fenugreek and my dr approved. When I talked to my dr, they also suggested trying to pump in between a couple feelings to try to up my supply. I have seen a slight increase but it's still not up to par yet.

It is definitely frustrating and a ton of work, but it'll b worth it if I can get it up. If not, I'll just accept that I've tried my best and move on. As long as he's healthy and doing good then that's all that matters.
  • Very encouraging. Thank you
