Swelling in one ankle

So my right ankle is more swollen than my left. Has anyone else experienced this? I am now taking it easy and propping up my feet but is it something I should contact my doctor about immediately?

If it were me I would call the doc to be sure.

I just had a convo about this with my doctor and chiropractor. If there is only swelling in one limb/joint/etc that it could mean that there is a blood clot. I would talk to your doc asap.

Better safe than sorry - call! Let us know how it turns out.

Agree with all PPs to call doc ASAP because it could be a sign of something serious, and to add a positive story-- this happened to my sis a couple weeks ago (her and I have the same due date!) and her doc had her go into the ER immediately where they determined she didn't have a clot, just needed a lot more h2o.

Oh seriously?? My left foot is a lot more swollen. I am getting in touch with my OB now. I thought it was nothing.

My Doctor wasn't concerned that it's only the left leg. She said it's common and just elevate it.
    Maybe it depends which leg?

I had one foot swell more than the other at first. My doctor said if it got red or discolored and hurt (or felt numb!), then it was a problem. Otherwise, it's fine. BUT you should call your doctor just to be safe and so they're aware.

Have you had any injuries in that foot? I fractured a bone in my left foot and that foot is usually more swollen then the other.

My Doctor also said that if it does hurt then I should worry.

I had a little swelling in my left ankle yesterday. Called the doc, was told to drink extra water, and check on it in the morning. Must have been dehydration because my ankle was back to normal this morning. Call if you are worried, but hopefully it is nothing serious.

This has been happening to me for the past 3 months. Doctor told me it was nothing to worry about. My left swells way more than my right. He said that since I work in an office and sit all day, I'm cutting off the flow to one side more than the other by the way I'm sitting. So it may not be all bad.  :-/

I did sprain the ankle that is more swollen a few years ago! It never really went back to "normal." but I am still calling my OB just to be safe.

I've heard that asymmetrical swelling is a red flag not to be ignored. Good idea to call your OB. I'd much rather have the doctor say, "no big deal, just drink more water and put your feet up," than NOT call and it turns out to be something serious.

So I visited my mom because my OB office closes early on Friday and didn't want to pay for an ER visit if it wasn't a big deal. My mom has been a RN for 30 years and works at the NICU plus she's had 7 kids of her own. She told me that the amount and kind of swelling I am having is normal for someone who is 30 weeks pregnant when its 100 degrees outside! She said that that my ankles aren't different enough to be concerned and it is likely a little different because of a past sprain. She said if I start feeling any pain or numbness or if it doesn't go down at night.

I have only had swelling around my ankles a few times....when I've been on my feet out the heat/humidity while wearing sandals with an ankle strap. I think the strap restricts the blood flow. Since I switched to flip flops, I haven't had it. But when I did it was worse in the left but I had an injury to that ankle. When it swelled, it looked just like when I rolled it. But I would still ask if you are concerned, better safe than sorry!

My left ankle regularly swells more than my right. Or has since May. Partly because my injuries from my accident were much worse on my left side. It could possibly be because your vena cava is on your right side and if you're like me and struggling to sleep on your left side, you may not be getting as much blood flow. But I'm not a doctor so who knows. I would just do as your doctor says and if you start to feel pain call them immediately.

Weird...I was just about to make a post similar to this. Woke up this morning and it feels like I sprained my right ankle. It's hurt to walk on it all day (it was fine yesterday and nothing happened)...but it's not really swollen. Just hurts. Is yours painful?

It's not painful which is why I didn't call the doctor first. I sprained the same ankle a few years ago which I have realized is why it swells up a little more, because it never really went back to normal. I will get an aching ankle when the weather is changing or if I have been on my feet a lot. Maybe you are experiencing the typical joint pain from the extra weight and fluid?
