Recently had a cerclage done at 16 weeks and I was just curious how long it last and were you able to carry to full term and also about bed rest , were you able be to work after having it done.

Thank you ladies in advance :)

  • If you don't kick in to labor sometime before, they usually remove a cerclage at about 36 weeks. You should be able to go about your business as usual with regards to work, etc. I'd imagine they still require pelvic rest. I'm an L&D nurse, so I've taken care of patients with cerclages, but never had one of my own.  Hope this helps and good luck to you :)

  • I had an emergent cerclage placed at 20 wks during my last pregnancy. I was told at the time that the average time that an emergent cerclage lasts is 4 wk. However, each patient and situation are different. Luckily, I was only 1 centimeter dilated when mine was placed. We made it all the way to 39 4/7 wks!

Regarding bedrest, one of my providers recommended bed rest while the other did not. I did an "abbreviated" bed rest (i.e. took it easy when my body told me to).

This time around I opted for a preventative cerclage that I had placed at 15 wks (although ideally it should be placed around 13 wks but due to my call schedule at work I had to reschedule). Preventative cerclages have a much higher success rate as compared to ones placed emergently. Best of luck to you!

  • Also a cerclage lady here! Got mine in around 14 weeks because of a 19 week loss 2 years ago..I heard they take it out once the baby is viable outside of the womb? But I'm not sure. Not on bed rest but was told I need to "be boring". I sit in a chair at work, and if I walk around too much in a day I start to feel that gross heavy scary feeling. Do you get that too? 17 weeks today. Hopeful that this stitch will keep this little boy in me! Glad to hear someone else is going through the same thing.
