big brother gift

For those of you with older kids, have you given a gift from the baby to the older sibling? If so, what did you do?

I'm wanting to get something for my older boy from baby so he feels loved on whenever little brother is born, but I don't know what to do.... any suggestions?

Re: big brother gift

  • When my second son was born we got them matching big brother little brother shirts and had the baby wear his and my oldest wear his to come in and meet each other for the first time. I also bought a special toy for the baby to give my oldest and had my oldest pick out something to buy the baby before he was born. So they each gave each other a present

  • That's a cute idea with the tshirts @abbymessina! I might do that... My thing is he already has SO. MUCH. STUFF. I am a bit of a minimalist, and I don't really want to just keep adding to the toys in our house. This may be a good way around it :>
  • I know what you mean about toys!!!! We have sooooo many toys. We only did the toy route because it was a toy he had his eye on for months so I knew how happy it would make him and being it was a gift from his new brother, we just thought it would be special. And when he got to pick out something to buy his baby brother I think it really made him feel special and like a real big brother. You could always do a more personalized gift, you could check out pintrest for ideas of things people have had made or done themselves ?
  • I'd say depends on age and interests. My oldest is 18 months and for him I put together a gift that included activities to do while visiting the hospital. Magic finger paints, cars, snack cups with his favorite treats, a new mickey mouse cup, and interactive books. He loved it but still wasn't thrilled with being at the hospital, just too little to understand. He also had a big brother shirt that I made him to wear to our hospital birth photo shoot!
  • We bought DS a superhero cape. :)

DS1 is two so we bought activities for him to do in the hospital. I had coloring books, books to read, blank paper for him to draw, and I also got him a stuffed puppy because he loves dogs.

  • Our little boy loves superheroes. We got him a captian America back pack shaped like the shield. He offered to carry the baby's stuff in it. Sweet little boy!
  • Omg ladies, these are all precious ideas!! My guy is 22 months, so the activity bag sounds awesome. Even though I'm planning a homebirth, I bet it would be super helpful for when I'm nursing for him to have some stuff to do on his own. Great ideas!! Thanks for the help :)

Our son picked out a monkey (angel dear is the company) that looked like one that he has. My husband had him bring it to the hospital to give it to her. He was proud of himself and he brings it to her now all the time. Her monkey is pink. His is brown. I highly recommend having them pick out something special for the new baby.
  • @corndogrobot that's a really sweet idea! Love it! And what a sweet little guy you have too :)
  • My stepson is 12 so we got him noise cancelling headphones and a couple Dr. Who things. :)
  • For DD who is almost 2 we bought her a Barbie - which was promptly lost by us somehow from an outside pocket of the diaper bag somewhere between arriving at the hospital and our recovery room the next day. Luckily she didn't notice at all. DS who is 4 got a small action figure from Planes.

I actually had both kids pick out their "hospital gifts" a few weeks ahead of time so they had something to look forward to when they came to visit. This was good for DS since even though he's great with babies he's not super interested in newborns and was a little bored. DD was fascinated with her little sister and ended up not needing an incentive. That said I feel bad and have buying her a Barbie on my to-do list since we lost the one she picked out.
  • DS (age 4) bought DD a My Pal Violet, like the My Pal Scout dog he loved as a baby. We programsd it with her name so it was ready when he came to the hospital to visit.

He also brought cupcakes for her birthday that he picked out with my mom on the way to the hospital. We sang happy birthday to her and ate them (which he loved).
