Baby Wearing Mama's What are Your Favorites?

For the seasoned Mamas what are your favorite slings for babywearing? Also, Mamas with bad backs, were you able to baby wear or did it hurt? I have scoliosis in my lower back and sway back and I can't even carry too heavy of a purse without getting some crazy back pain.

Re: Baby Wearing Mama's What are Your Favorites?

  • So I really really wanted to like moby wrap, and I loved it, but my baby did not. I live in Florida and it was just too hot to wear him that close and have him wrapped, but I have a lot of friends who really liked moby.

I loved ergo because it's a little more versatile and doesn't quite pull the way traditional wraps do. You can also wear them to the side in the ergo which you might find helpful with your back. I will say it definitely starts to make your back sore after a while.

These were the 2 out of the suggested carriers from the review I looked at that I liked-

I have not tried these in real life but liked the way the sounded from the review.

I have had friends with the Moby wrap that said the same thing about it being too warm for the baby. Not sure either of these options would be any better.
I haven't seen the Ergo wrap but I shall look.

  • I plan on getting the solly baby wrap. I've heard it's like the moby wrap but made of a lighter more breathable fabric. I haven't used it but everything I've read said it's really great.
  • I have the original Ergo with the infant insert already (it isn't a wrap, so much as a very well constructed canvas baby front/backpack). My husband has modeled it for me and he really seems to like it. But I'm interested in hearing if anyone has used the Lillebaby carriers as they all allow for baby to face out too, don't require the insert, seem to have better options for summer, and have a lumbar support insert. After buying the Ergo, which I still am really glad I did, I heard about these, started doing more research, and it seems like the only option that parents were even more religiously attached to. So @J1D I'm interested in hearing the responses you get to this based on actual experience from some of our ladies.
  • I have an Ergo with an infant insert, and I found it to be too hot for DS, as he was born in May. But I have been able to wear him in it despite some back pain and knee pain, even when he was over 30 lbs and I was very newly pregnant.

If I was in the market for a new carrier, though, I'd probably go with the Ergo 360 because it lets the baby face out as well as offering the other options of the traditional Ergo.

I would get some sort of wrap or sling for your newborn though, as I think the Ergo and similar carriers are best suited to babies who are at least a couple months old and have developed the ability to support their own head and neck.

@MamaOwl15 I was thinking the same thing. Wrap for tiny baby, carrier for a little later.

I read the reviews about the infant insert being hot after buying but decided that considering the pretty frigid winters we get that can start pretty early, it might actually be a good thing considering her birth time. Did you find the Ergo to be cumbersome and ill-suited to a newborn even with the insert? It says 7 lbs, and the wraps make me nervous. I can be such an absent minded klutz, I'm afraid somehow I would let her drop out or something.

As a fellow klutz, I hear you! I haven't personally tried a wrap, so I can't speak for that. However, I had no issues using the infant insert other than the heat. For a fall/winter baby, especially if it's cold where you are, that shouldn't be a problem.

I also have a mei tai carrier, which I never liked, but can't bring myself to get rid of because it was handmade and a gift . . . It never felt as secure as the Ergo. Even with a 30-lb toddler in it, the Ergo felt nice and secure.

  • Moby, Tula and Ergo. I wore my babies until they were about two. Moby was great for newborns, and it was fall and winter so didn't have to worry about them being too warm. Ergo was great starting around 6 months and Tula was awesome starting then too. Switched between Ergo and Tula until about 15 months and then went exclusively with my Tula until I stopped wearing them. Ergo was great for walks and hiking and stuff. Tula was for everything else.
  • Moby or ring sling until 15 or so pounds (yes Moby is hot, but this is good for our fall and winter babes).

Then Tula, Lenny Lamb and ergo ssc. Ergo is my least favorite of those three brands, because it isn't as comfy, but it is cheaper so more of an option for people on a tight budget. The soft structured carriers are great because you adjust all of the buckles and straps perfectly to fit you so putting them on is very quick and easy.

I received the solly wrap and I love it!! It's really light weight and breathable. Tried it out with my 12 lb dog since I don't have a baby to try it out on yet...
