We are flying next week with our 12 week old. I am hoping she sleeps most of the flight! I have been doing research on flying with babies her age and would love any advice you may have!
What to bring
Tips for traveling with a car seat
Wearing baby vs stroller
How to manage breastfeeding on the plane

Re: Flying cross country with baby

  • I'd definitely wear the baby if you can go without bringing your stroller! I've gotten so I hate even using the stroller. Wearing her is just so easy, no one can get in her face and touch her, she usually falls asleep, and she never cries (like she does in the stroller).

  • I'm taking a trip in September with baby and I might fly I was wondering some of the same things
  • Definitely wear baby if you can. Check as many things at ticket counter as possible because security with car seats, stroller, etc was incredibly hectic and stressful. You can gate check it all (which you may choose to do if you have a long wait at the airport, layover, or if you bought a seat for baby) but I did it both ways and greatly preferred to check it at the ticket counter. If you bring any liquids for baby, pull them out of your carry on for scanning. They will use test strips on them - plan an extra 10-15 min for that. If you can swing it, buying that extra seat for the baby is worth it's weight in gold IMO. I too cheap lol and didn't. The flight was full and I had a big guy next to me. DS was squirmy and my arms fell asleep holding him. His head was partially out in the aisle because the person in front of me reclined their seat. It was sooooo uncomfortable for a 1.5 hour flight. Don't know if I could make it across country like that! We had a really late flight another night which was almost empty so they let us bring car seats on and use an extra seat next to us. My LO didn't really want to be on the car seat for long but just having that extra seat was awesome for holding bottles, bibs, burp rags, etc. It's really hard to reach under your seat with LO on your lap so I recommend pulling out any necessities ahead of time and putting them in the seat pocket in front of you. Overall it wasn't as bad as I thought. Good luck!
  • I just flew from Alaska to Virginia with my 9 week old son and he was a dream! I took my moby and wore him in that most of the time, but, I also took our car seat and stroller because I traveled alone and that was nice to have in the airport during our layover. It was extremely helpful having them with me, as I could easily use the bathroom and it was another form of entertainment for my son. A pilot on my second flight told me NOT to feed him on the way up, but to give him a pacifier or finger to help with ears because if you feed them it can give them more gas bubbles in their tummies. I'm not sure if that's true but I followed his advice and my LO didn't spit up like he did on the first flight. Also, his nursing pillow was nice to have, I didn't use it for him but it was a good size for me lol. Make sure to bring a full change of clothes for you as well. Little guy spit up a lot on first flight and had a blowout diaper and I only had a change of shirt, but I definitely needed pants too.

We flew from Seattle to DC a few weeks ago. Couple things to add: a little water (bottled purchased at a store at the airport) in a baby bottle helps baby to reduce pressure on the ears during take off and landing. Just a few sips. Also a baby hat is helpful because when the air blows on their heads it can get cold. Have your changing pad, diaper and wipes ready to grab because it's a pain to bring the bag into the bathroom stalls and there's not a lot of room.
  • Thank you for all of the tips! Considering a long plane trip with DD and now I think we can (and should) do it.
  • Hey, here to update you ladies on my experience. I flew with my 3 mo for 6 hours, i rented a bassinet, which i was only able to keep her in for a total of one hour because of turbulence but it was a good experience.

1 thing though, if you ebf, pump both breasts dry before flying and breastfeed at lease once from each breast on board! I didn't and was so badly engorged i was about to cry from the pain when i did finally try to feed her, she couldn't drink because i was so full! When i finally got to the hotel I couldn't plug my electric breast pump because of socket difference and completely forgot that it could work on batteries lol. Other than that it wasn't too bad, LO fussed, slept, played and did everything she did on a normal day.

If you're flying soon and you're as worried as i was before flying, don't be :)
