Need belly button opinion (pic)

image
DD is 9 weeks old. Her belly button has never healed right. Last week at her well baby check, the Dr treated it with silver nitrate. Her belly button did everything the Dr said it would (kinda stabbed over and turned gray). Today the scab came off and it looks like this now. It was bleeding too. I called the Dr twice today and the nurses said give it another week and make sure it gets air to it, hence the bandaid because air cannot physically get to it unless I pull her skin down. I cant help but be worried about it still... It is bright red and shiny and poking out. What do u all think? Does it look infected to you? Should I really give it another week or should I try and get an appointment tomorrow? Thanks for any opinions.

  • It does not look infected. Signs of infection would be swelling, warmth, pus, foul smell

  • I don't think it looks infected. It actually looks like its healing nicely. I would leave her shirtless as much as possible to let it air out.

My LO's looked similar. The Dr gave us an antibacterial solution to put on it 3x a day. It scabbed over, fell off and bled 2 or 3 times before it finally dried up completely. Let it air out as much as possible; no bandaid/clothes over it
  • It doesn't look infected and if it's not bothering her then I would just let it air out like the doctor said and just keep an eye out for signs of infection. My son's belly button never bled, so I have no experience with this, but that's what I would do in this situation. I know it's really hard not to stress out with the little ones!!
  • DS had a similar-looking belly button, but his was a bit smaller.  We went back for a second treatment, and it was much better after that, and I think it was four or five days in-between treatments.

DD had it the same when she was 8.5 weeks but would ooze a bit then scab up fall off and repeat but would get smaller slowly. I had called the pedi but said she would see it at her shot appointment, it was not infected and she put a solution(i dont remember the name was to worried about shots but prolly silver nitrate) that turned her belly button and all around it gray. I also didnt bathe her for 3 days but on the 2nd day a little dry nub fell out when i changed her diaper and it started peeling all around and she is now 10 weeks and still has a bit left to peel but its all better. But you should let her be in just diapers and fold the top part so its not touching/close to her belly button and put her on her back on a playmat or mobile so she can be kicking airing it but if you dont see it getting dry im 2 weeks call your pedi to get a second treatment. LO's pedi told me to do this incase it didnt dry out the first time around and if i didnt want to get the treatment she said it should be pretty much all healed up by her 4 month appointment. The pic is how it looked 4 days after.
  • I have let it air out but now there's kind of another scab over it. It's not bloody anymore. Do I clean it out again or should I not mess with it?
  • I continued to put the Betadine on 3x a day even when scabbed over. What are you cleaning it with?
  • Cleaning it with just warm water. They haven't given me anything to put on it, just said to let it air out. Problem with that is that air doesn't get to it unless I push her skin down. Oh well, thanks to everyone for all the comments, I do feel better after hearing all your opinions.
  • I would not clean it out then if it's just with water

At her first check pedi said to leave it be, air it and just dab it with a q tip to take the moisture or any ooze off.
  • My baby turned 9 weeks today and has the same problem.. We have done 4 silver nitrate treatments so far.. It's currently still black and crusty from the last time, but hoping that this was the last time! The dr called it a granuloma.. Good luck to your baby's belly button!
  • This looks similar to my daughters. She has had hers treated three times with silver nitrate and it never got better. She is now 11 weeks old and her pediatrician is sending us to a specialist. The pediatrician called it a granuloma. She said it is harmless and may resolve on its own but I'm still going to take her to the specialist just for peace of mind.
