C-section or version and induced

So at my 36 week appointment we saw that baby was breech and I was scheduled for a version. When I went to have that done baby had already sneaky flipped and was head down. I wanted to just wait until my next doctors appointment which was the 7th (because then I could see my regular OB) but the woman covering for her insisted on seeing me this week again and of course Miss Baby is back to being breech.

She is going to schedule another version and said that it's possible that I'll have to have it and then be induced early to keep her from flipping again. Does this seem a little excessive? I mean, I've had a baby before and she was almost 42 weeks (11 days late) before she was ready. I will be 38 weeks on Monday but she's talking about this Friday for the version.

I hear of a lot of people that get induced only to end up with a c-section because of lack of progress. I would rather just have the c-section in the first place than deal with that! At least they don't schedule those until 39 weeks.

Part of me feels like the OB is being paranoid about it. They're going to call me sometime today about the version and I'm going to tell them I can't do it until Monday. At least at that point my regular OB will be there and I'll be 38 weeks.

Re: C-section or version and induced

  • I agree with you. Sounds too hasty to be already be making induction decisions. I would wait to talk to your doctor. I also agree that I would rather wait until 39 weeks and if baby is still breech do a csection rather than induction. Good luck!

  • I think it makes sense to induce after the version so baby doesn't have a chance to flip again. Can you push the version back to 39wks? You are a better candidate for induction because you have had a previous vaginal delivery. Often inductions that end in csection are FTMs. I would go induction route instead of scheduled csection.

  • I would also ask for a second opinion or for more information on your options

  • I am also breech right now (35.5wks) and I felt him flipped a week ago. I have no plans to do a version or csection at this point. I have been doing some recommended stuff from spinnningbabies.com as well as going to the chiro to keep my hips aligned and ligaments loose as well as bouncing on a birthing ball to encourage him to flip and drop. My OB recommended diving up and down in the swimming pool which I will do next week if he hasn't flipped. He may have actually flipped when I was laying upside down on the board but I am not 100% sure. I have ultrasounds every week b/c I am high risk so I will see on Tuesday. My OB said if he is still breech next week then we will talk about doing a version at 37wks. I figure we have a couple weeks to get him to flip. I may have to be induced anyway but my OB said that she has flipped babies in labor so she didn't seem too concerned about it. I have found if you just tell your OB how you feel about it they will discuss options with you and be open to doing different things depending on what you want.

  • I would definitely choose the version and induction over a c-section if I had to make that decision. I would never ever choose a c-section if there were another option to try. Since your baby keeps flipping back and forth, it makes sense that your doctor would want to induce if they get the baby flipped back to head down so that you don't chance the baby flipping back to breech and have no other option but a section. The suggestion you got about asking to wait to do the version at 39 weeks sounds like a good plan. You will be full-term by then and baby will be more developed and ready.
  • NO! Just because they induce you does not
Mean baby will immediately come please refuse this!!! It is excessive and unnecessary. If you do the version she may flip back on her own because even though you are induced doesn't mean anything! It could take days for baby to come and that just means more steps for you ultimately maybe then leading to a c section!
I refused the version for risk of how she was sitting and my doctor decided to schedule a c section and wait it out she said well just keep monitoring her position of it comes to your date and she's still not flipped she'll be born.

Exactly this for me as well. I'm a FTM, and even though a csection was far from how I had imagined my birth experience, the risks of a version swayed me. I'm scheduled for a csection next week at 39 w 3 d. Can you talk to your ob about potentially scheduling the version later? 38 weeks seems too early to me.
  • They're waiting until 38 weeks to do the version and I will not be induced. I'm hoping that she'll flip again on her own and I won't have to deal with it at all. My regular OB will be here by then and I'll talk with her ASAP about how things look.

I'm looking at it as she's potentially still a month away from being ready. I would rather she pick her birthday when she's ready, rather than the doctor because she's worried about something that hasn't happened yet.
  • Right! Glad to hear that! I only refused the version because we're military and numerous dads told my husband don't do it! My wife was in pain and they had to do emergency c sections, so I decided that route will be best but who knows her crazy wiggles may flip her over one day! Good luck ladies
  • I personally wouldn't schedule a c section or induction. I would attempt a version and successful or not, I wouldn't be induced or do a c section. Once labor starts, if LO hasn't flipped before or during labor and they can't flip them during, then and only then would I consent to a csection. I hate the thought of some OBs and practices scheduling csections for the only reason being a breech presentation purely because it's easier to schedule.
If LO is healthy and there's nothing else worrisome, I would push them to leave you alone. I would agree to every monitoring under the sun but not jump the gun with induction or csection unless LOs vitals looked worrisome. Good luck!

  • My LO was breech until 36 weeks and my plan was to do the version at 37 weeks, and if it was unsuccessful I would attempt a vaginal breech birth. I refused to schedule a csection and was always planning to let LO come when he/she is ready.

  • Success rates with a version drop drastically at 39 weeks due to possible engagement of presenting part and fetal weight which is why they are usually scheduled in the 37th-38th week. Also if baby has flipped on own and flipped back already it sounds like it is not even close to being engaged so it has a higher potential of flipping back. Just a few questions: do you have a lot or little fluid or are you obese ( just asking so I can weigh in as an L&D RN so please I do not mean anything by asking this!). You you have a lot of fluid or are obese the baby has a high potential to keep flipping which is why the dr would talk about induction if they are able to do a successful version. If there isn't enough fluid a version may not even work. That being said they would at least schedule a c/s for sometime in the 39th week due to hospital scheduling if you would refuse the induction which you have every right to do. I do find from experience in the hospital that inductions are more successful for 2nd time+ moms so that is just some food for thought. If they didn't schedule the c/s in your 39th week then slots could fill and only so many scheduled procedures can happen in a given day. They should still do an u/s at the 39 weeks of you schedule the c/s cause baby could still flip. If you have any other questions feel free to pm me but as a L&D RN I would definitely get the second opinion too
  • They didn't say anything about fluid so I'm guessing normal and normal weight (5'7" 150lbs prior to pregnancy). She hasn't dropped yet so there's still room in there for her to flip. My first didn't drop until around 40 weeks and was born 11 days past due date.

My regular OB will be there so that already makes me more comfortable.
  • I did a version at 37 weeks. They said after that it gets harder and less chances of success because the baby gets too big. If they wanted to induce you right after flipping the baby then I would want to wait till 39 weeks to! You still have some time. I have a scheduled c section on Monday my baby girl is breech I'll be 39 weeks. They said I could wait until I go into labor but then it turns into more of an emergency unplanned c section so I decided against that. No matter how your baby gets here as long as you both are safe!! ♡♡♡
