Heart on the right side?

So we went for our anatomical ultrasound and were told that everything looked great but the heart was slightly positioned to the right. Has anyone had this?? If so what was the result? We go in on Wednesday to see a specialist ....soooo nervous and worried and hoping it was just a mistake on the ultrasound.

Re: Heart on the right side?

  • I don't have any experience with this, but you and your little will be in my thoughts.  Several women here have seen specialists for follow up ultrasounds for various reasons. Perhaps they can share a bit with you about their experiences and what to expect.  Is the specialist a MFM or a cardiologist?

  • I have met adults with this. It should be just fine. They are usually healthy people.
  • I have no experience but I'm sending lots of thoughts and prayers your way. Please keep us updated?
  • I've also known adults who've had this, as long as the heart was fully developed and functioning, it shouldn't be much of an issue. Baby might be monitored closely and it's something your pediatrician should be aware of.

We talked about this at our scan. Our kid doesn't have this but apparently there is a pro basketball player who has his heart completely on the right side of his chest (like not a little to the right. On the right) and he has zero complications. I think he probably should wear a medic alert bracelet though - so if he ever has to have emergency surgery of any kind on his heart or even abdomen, the doctor will know where his heart is, or not to accidentally hit the heart.
  • I work with cardio nurses and patients and I have seen adults with this a few times. They never seemed to have any issues other than having to flip lead placement for heart monitors and ECG's.
  • From what I've looked up, as long as your little one's heart is fully functional, they should be fine. I have some organs and arteries in the wrong place, I won't bore you with details, but let's just say I had a surgery going on 2 years ago that the doc said I should've been in a text book. So yeah, I don't think you should be too concerned. If you are really concerned, ask to be referred to a specialist. I pray everything works out for your and your LO, and family. Please keep us updated.

  • Maybe she thought she posted this on a different thread?
  • I think she meant to post it on the thread with the other mom whose going through the same thing.
  • "Just positioning of the heart is questionable. Located to the right!!!" Is the same OP.

OP, don't feel bad, I got confused too!
  • Yes I was trying to find her outcome

But you started them both? I'm not trying to be negative here, but maybe pregnancy brain and stress has taken its toll.
I hope your baby is healthy and born safe :)
  • No your not being negative your just being rude!!!

When the heart is on the right side of the body it's called dextrocardia. There are two types of dextrocardia, situs inversus and embryonic arrest, the latter being associated with heart defects. That being said, it usually does not represent an issue other that having the heart in the other side. Specialist will most likely discuss the possible outcomes and do further testing just to be safe. Praying everything is ok!

This!! Even if one of these, they typically don't cause any major issues and are just monitored. :) don't fret too much mama'
