3rd Trimester

Growth scan today baby measuring in the 5th percentile VERY SMALL

i had an ultrasound today at 35 weeks 5 days because my doctor thought that my baby would be big because I've gained 53 lbs so far (starting weight was 130) so she wanted to check his growth but the results of the ultrasound showed that his head was measuring normal size but his femurs and abdomen were measuring very small, only in the 5th percentile! And he is only weighing 4 lbs which I know is only an estimate but doctor seemed very worried so she is scheduling me for another ultrasound for later in the week at another office to get a second opinion and she wants me to now come in twice a week to monitor baby's heartbeat!!! I'm beginning to get worried now because my doc said she's never seen a case like this where mom is gaining a bunch of weight but baby isn't growing and she mentioned something about inducing me at 37 weeks! Is anyone else's baby measuring small? I wonder if a significantly smaller abdomen and very short legs could be a sign of dwarfism?

Very sorry that you're going through this, must be quite emotional. Curious: Was your 20 week anatomy scan normal? Would be very strange to have a normal anatomy scan and then an irregular scan so late in the pregnancy.

Hang in there, I know this has got to be very tough.

  • @sokomo yes my 20 week scan was completely normal! He was measuring perfectly right on date and that's why I'm worried! I'm thinking maybe he's not getting the nutrients from the placenta he needs to grow anymore or what? Ugh I have another ultra sound tomorrow so I'm hoping to get more answers then
  • Don't go by estimates !!! Drs are frequently wrong when It comes to weight... They told me my son would only be 7.5-8 lbs and no bigger ... He was born weighing 9 lbs oz and he was 23 inches long with a head corcumfrence of 39.5 !! They were WAY off !! Don't stress momma !
  • Did you have any prenatal testing done? And to echo what was said above.. The weight estimates are not very accurate.. They could say baby is 5 lbs and have him/her be 7lbs.. Hear it all the time.

Try not to worry. If you have a strong heart beat then rest assured things will be okay :)
  • Can you see a Maternal Fetal Medicine doctor / specialist?

My daughter's long bones measured short, and her head and abdomen measured normal. We saw an MFM regularly to follow her growth and look for other abnormalities. There was nothing else concerning, so there were no interventions. I delivered her on her due date.

  • @Bat_Ish_Crazy yes my doctor is trying to get me into mfm but they are booked out so far I can't schedule an appt soon enough
  • Short long bones are soft markers for downs. My 20 week scan was fairly normal. But I had an u/s at the beginning of my 3rd trimester which showed my baby was measuring small in legs and arm length. I think the last one we had was 3 percent. My mfm said if its dwarfism that its usually 6 weeks or more behind. The odds are 1 in 25000. She didnt have dwarfism but does have downs.
  • FWIW, these measurements can mean something, or nothing. I'm short. My whole family is short. The MFMs opinion was that my daughter was just on track to follow in my short footsteps. There were no immediate health concerns.

Now, we've since learned that she has a genetic condition affecting collagen production & that is the reason her long bones were short. BUT, there are still no immediate health concerns. She is healthy and happy, and will put a bit more effort into protecting her joints than your average Joe.

I measured small too and have gained a bunch of weight.... But my umbilical cord is coming out of the side of the placenta which means she could be getting less nutrients and growing slower.  Everything else is good.  I have to get more u/s to check up on her, but i'm not worried.  A small baby isn't necessarily a bad thing... just  a small thing : )
  • Well, this makes me feel better and worse... have read just about every post on 3rd tri scans and if you should have one.  Worried about not "checking" on the baby's size/amino fluid/etc.... haven't had one since 28ish weeks.... I was seeing a perinatologist but they told me my OB could do my 35 week scan and now the Dr said it isn't necessary and that kind of freaks me out.  I guess if they don't have a diagnosed reason to or reason the baby is having issues, they don't "need" to do it.  I guess I will ask again at my next appt.  There was a great thread on this in 2013 with growth charts by week/ultrasound findings.
  • Your baby is considered IUGR if they are under 10th percentile 2 growth checks in a row. If that is the case they should offer you weekly monitoring. At least my hospital did with MFM at 24 weeks when baby had a growth check after the 20 week us. Now I go every week for them to monitor cord blood flow. So far that is perfect and baby is still gaining over 150g every 2 weeks which should be the minimum for no concerns I was told. They do the growth measurements every other week. All additional genetic and infection testing was normal so it's up to the doctor to determine if there is actual growth restriction happening or if baby is likely just small. So far just small is my case but they still are taking precautions with weekly checks. If your baby is not IUGR no need for that.
  • I had this exact thing happen with our baby--he is measuring in the 12th percentile--I've gained a bunch of weight and baby is still small--I have to go in twice a week for NSTs and once every 3 weeks for growth measurements--doctor also said that he wants to induce at 37 weeks--I'm currently 36 weeks, so it's getting close!
  • That's surprising he wants to induce if still in 12th percentile. But I'm sure baby is cooked and strong. Good luck!
