Breastfeeding

Thyroid issues?

Hello, Ladies! I'm expecting my first in January and have decided I would like to EBF. I understand there are several factors that can change my plans, and have a question for you regarding thyroid function and the ability to breastfeed. I'm hoping someone can share their experience and/or success story with me!
I have Hashimoto's and currently take 200mcg Synthroid daily. Pre pregnancy I took 175mcg. I understand that thyroid dysfunction can cause issues when it comes to breastfeeding as supply sometimes doesn't come in, milk doesn't let down, or supply is extremely low. I have found conflicting information regarding how medication affects the chances of successful breastfeeding.
Do you have any experience you wish to share?

Thank you in advance!

I have Hashimotos hypothyroid. Was managed during pregnancy with synthyroid and have had it monitored since I've delivered. I had low milk supply for 6 weeks and my milk was 1 week delayed coming in. I can only attribute my milk issues with my thyroid issues and stress. I have been successfully pumping and nursing for 6 weeks with a full supply. I have worked extreme hard to get and maintain my normal supply.

  • I have a friend who has this as well and is trying to breastfeed, her and I have done some research on the subject and sadly there isn't much. My best advice is to talk to your endocrinologist, your OB, and a very knowledgeable lactation consultant, your local La Leche group leaders can get you in contact with one.
  • My endocrinologist and pediatrician said it is totally safe for baby as long as dosage is under a certain level of mcg / day. I have had no issues with supply... Felt tingly the morning after delivery as my milk started coming in.. Been 12 weeks since then and have had my dosage adjusted lower twice as my hormones and weight changed. Was able to build up 300oz freezer stash while still nursing LO
  • @ldmw @etayislove @sal3rnost  Thank you for your responses! I definitely plan on discussing further with my Endo, OB, and others. I appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences.

  • I don't have hashimoto's but I am on 88mcg of synthroid since becoming pregnant. I am up to about 600ml / day and have 2wk old twins. I feel like my supply has come in OK but not great.... But I am exclusively pumping right now since my boys were in the NICU for the first 12 days. I haven't heard about thyroid effecting supply so this is something I will definitely be researching and talking to the LC about!
  • I have hashi's that was controlled during my first and second pregnancies before, during, and after. My milk came in on night 3 with my oldest daughter following a planned c-section, never had supply issues (in fact had major overactive letdown issues). We had other breastfeeding issues but nothing ever related to supply, and we never had to supplement and breastfed till over 18 months.

I had a c-section with my second this past Friday (so we are just over 72 hours out). My milk came in after about 36 hours, and the only problem I am having is trying to get my sleepy baby to nurse enough cause my boobs feel like they might explode.

I will say, after my first baby I swung severely hyperthyroid by about month 3 and then swung really far back hypothyroid and had to get back on meds by month 4. I fortunately was being closely monitored. I never noticed a significant change in milk supply during that. I just got the orders in to go for my first round of postpartum bloodwork this time. It will likely get checked at least every 3-4 weeks for a few months till everything levels out again.
  • I think everyone will be different and every baby is different

I have hashimotos and have been on levotyroxone for a while.. Also have pcos so two things against me. With my first I breastfeed exclusively for 15 months we had ups and downs but we made it. I just had my second and she is so much more efficient! My milk came in within 5 days.. Whereas with my first it took about 1.5 weeks.

    Good luck!
