c section scheduled and im CRUSHED

So I've been shooting for a vbac since day 1 of this pregnancy. Doc seemed to be on board. Now I just came back from my appointment today and they scheduled me for another c section. They say baby hasnt engaged and this doc (there's a few in the practice) wont induce vbacs other then breaking my water. Im only 1cm so she says she cant break my water. The only doc that does "feel comfortable" inducing with a foley bulb is conveniently on vacation until next tue. My doctor says its too long to wait until the other doc gets back. She agreed to check me when I go in for my c section and if im dialated enough then she can try to break my water but other then that ill have to have this c section. I feel totally crushed. I dont want another c section. Any advice? Its difficult for me to find doctors that accept my insurance and with me being so far along (im due aug 3) most practices wont take me this late in the game. :(

So you're 5 days away from due date and only dilated to a 1 (which is probably common) but why MUST you do a c-section? Does the doc not believe you will go into labor naturally?? I'm confused because my due date is next week as well (ftm) and I am dilated to a 1 as well. But my doc never mentioned a c-section....

  • If I go into labor before my scheduled c section then ill be ok. They wanted to schedule a c section in case I dont go before then. They have it scheduled for next friday. So ill be 40 weeks and 4days

Why not just say no not till you are 42 weeks and then if you haven't gone in to labour your self the do the section.
You have the RIGHT TO SAY NO... Sorry for yelling CAPS.... but doctors are not gods they don't know your baby like your body does.
I would really be questioning the motives of the doctore here.... Due date are estimated and some babies need more time don't let them bully you. If baby is fine then wait for her to do her thing
  • She told me they don't allow anyone to go past 41 weeks because rate of stillbirth increases. :/
  • When will you be 41 weeks?
  • ^^ Yes. For instance my mother delivered two weeks after due date. I read it is common to deliver within two weeks of due date.

    I did not know this!!

  • Wow! I haven't heard of scheduling a c-section only a few days past the due date.  I am due August 1st and the doc told me we could schedule induction for August 11th just in case I make it that long so that seems crazy they won't let you wait a few more days.  But no matter what happens holding your sweet healthy baby will be worth it all!

It's all about liability they don't want you to go over there date they have set for you.
  • Ill be 41 weeks next monday
  • So the dr who will induce with a foley will be back before you are 41wks right?

  • I'm also hoping for a VBAC and my doc told me this morning I can go to 42 weeks. Please don't let them bully you and as others have said you have a right to refuse. My doula told me we have the right to change docs until it's time to push. Again, as previous poster said, if you show up in labor they have to deliver your baby!

I have had to stand firm with 2 doctors, it can be hard but it is possible to stay firm. So long as baby is ok then What's the issue?? My last birth they threaten me with a c section because I had a fever and babies heart rate was 180. I told them no I wasn't having one and that I was going to walk this baby back to a normal heart rate. They said I had one hour to do it my way...I told them I had all the time I need. If I had let them bully me like they wanted to them I would have had a section and not the vaginal birth I felt my body could do.

Tell them no and stick to your guns. If baby ends up in trouble and you are showen the monitor and feel it's right then consent to the section. No doctor has the right to make you do something you don't want to. But make them show you proof!
  • breezymeema7 Not a good idea to just refuse the c-section if it comes down to that in the US. True that they can't force a c-section, but wWith US insurance, they can say she went against medical advice and completely deny any related claims. If she did try to go natural and ended up with a c-section that could easily end up being a $20,000+ bill at the end of all of it. If she has a ton of extra money laying around, great, but yea... US insurance doesn't work like Canadian healthcare at all.

I would just leave the c-section right now and try talking to the doctor next Tuesday as soon as they are back. Maybe you can get them to schedule the induction instead of the c-section for Friday with that doctor if nothing else.

FWIW I understand not wanting another c-section. I'm scheduled for one for next week Friday also, but my hospital won't allow VBACs at all. Good luck, and I hope you just go into labor on your own before then!!
  • Doctors are worried about the perceived possible risk of uterine rupture with a vbac. There is really no more risk of uterine rupture with a previous c section than if previous births were vaginal, but some physicians, and hospitals actually, pick and choose which studies to believe. Should it be a woman's choice to have a vbac? Absolutely. But unfortunately some facilities simply won't allow it or make it extremely difficult for it to occur.
  • Jesse ill be 41 weeks and 1day when she returns but not sure if she'll be at the hospital, or one of there 3 locations.

Maybe ask to see the stats on the rate of still births after 41 weeks. My mom had all three of us 18 days late and my sister just had her first baby 18 days late and she was just under 7 lbs.
Or wait until that vbac doc gets back.
I'm not against c-sections b/c sometimes they are needed but I do know that they are used too much. If they can monitor the baby there is no reason to rush.
  • Ok, let me clarify. My c section is scheduled for August 7th. The other doctor doesn't come back until August 11
  • Do you know which Dr is going to do your csection? I wanted a VBAC last time around. I scheduled my back up csection with one of the only 2 Drs in the practice who was willing to induce me. I went at my scheduled time and asked to me induced. She agreed to induce me by breaking my water at 1cm. I quickly progressed to 6cm. Unfortunately 12hrs later I was still as 6cm and my contractions were too frequent for pitocin so I ended up with a csection. I felt better knowing I tried vs going straight to the OR.

  • Yes, the doc who will only induce by breaking my water is one who would be doing the c section. The other doctor who is ok with trying the foley induction won't be back until the 11th
  • The doc today said they need to be able to fit 2 fingers in my cervix to break my water. You are saying yours was broken being only 1cm?
  • I have a VERY VBAC friendly OB. We just had this discussion because I also have GD which can make providers induction happy. The only thing he explained that makes him nervous is that the hormones that ripen your cervix, also ripen the collagen in a c section scar. Since he's confident of my gestation, he said that he would let me go until 41 weeks because that's a happy medium of healthy babies, less pressure and loosening of scar tissue. He also will do a gentle induction with pitocin. I would push your doctor if you can to the 41 week mark when the other one is on duty and explain in a tactful way that the other birth plan was what had been discussed and it isn't your fault that only one doctor uses the bulb technique. Hopefully even if you aren't in labor, the conditions would be more favorable than weeks before and you could get labor jump started at that point. Good luck!

  • Sorry didn't realize there were only 2 Drs in your practice. I don't know why they need to get 2 fingers in there. They use a little plastic hook to break your water so it should work if you are only a fingertip dilated. Only downside is that you are on the clock but it was my only option so it was worth a shot.

@lalala2326 Yes, I did mention I wasn't sure if things were different then what they are in Canada and after reading this...they certainly are. It's unfortunate, to say the very least, that a decision/circumstance like this comes with a possible $20000+ price tag. That said OP, I really hope you are able to get your VBAC.

Talk to your doctor about the possibility of doing Non Stress Tests to monitor baby's health/environment during weeks 40 and 41 to try to push the CSection off a little bit. I'm attempting a VBAC, due August 22 - and my doctor's "CSection Date" is September 5. Yes, there are risks to birth. Yes, there are risks to VBAC. But there are ways to mitigate and monitor these risks, as well. Try bargaining and asking if there are any other options to give you a little more time.
