August 2015 Moms

Hmm...I never knew this was a thing (baby girls)...

So while lurking on the July board, I saw this post. I vaguelly remember hearing about this a few years ago (I think), but never paid it any mind because I have a son. Anyone else experience this or any other "strange" things that you did not expect with your children? https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12606673/mini-period-in-baby-girls#latest

  • I do remember hearing about this, but never notice it with my daughter.  DD is 2 1/2 and she is obsessed with rubbing her nipples.  I never expected this.

I will say that I think it is going to be weird having a little boy now who will get baby boners.

  • My mom told me I had a mini period as well when I was born and it freaked her out. I had no idea that could happen. Nothing really strange with my children except Disharge for a few days from my youngest daughter and her spraying poop 2 feet across the room lol. :-O
  • My baby girl hasn't had this, but occasionally we get babies in the NICU who have it. Although it can happen, I don't think it's all that common though... From what I've seen.
  • I was informed that this could happen and was completely normal when I had DD, I never experienced it though.
  • I've never heard of this! Glad I know or I would have panicked!!!

    Me too!!

I have a 3 year old daughter and I've never heard of this. It's good to know.
  • It happened with my daughter. My husband and I are both medical people but we totally freaked for about 5 minutes until we remembered that is the withdrawal from mom's estrogen. I think it was only one diaper.

  • Thanks for sharing! I had no idea, and would have totally freaked out!
  • I was warned about this when I had DD. she didn't have anything like that other than a bit of orangey coloured discharge for a day or so in her first week.

She did ask my father this morning what colour his bosoms are, however
  • DD1 didn't, but DD2 did. Apparently babies can leak a tiny bit of "milk" from their nipples. Again, from moms estrogen.
  • This is my learned something new for today. Thank you!
  • Huh. Interesting

Yes I've heard of this. Many years ago I had clinicals in the pediatric ER and a frantic mother and father brought their newborn girl because she was bleeding. Pediatrician assured them that sometimes the mother's hormones can cause the baby girl to have her "period" .
  • Wow...I never would have ever even thought about this!!! Glad you posted this thread for everyone having girls!

I'd heard of it but didn't go through it fortunately. We did have labial adhesion issues which I didn't know could happen :(

    What exactly does that involve?
  • my DD just had some discharge. She also had "lumps" in her breast tissue which is normal, but I had to ask pediatrician about it because it weirded me out. She also was born with her own linea negra which my ped had not seen before. All due to estrogen of course.

Wow - interesting! Thanks for sharing!
  • Oh I was just reminded by a PP - DD Also had mastitis briefly in her first few weeks. Just manifested as swollen nipples but it went away on its own.

Its when the inner labia adhere together. Fortunately we caught my daughter's early and her pedi was able to manually separate in office without much difficulty, and then we had to put vaseline on every diaper change for a few weeks and then once a day for like 6 months and then just regularly check now and use vaseline as needed... Apparently it can happen when there is irritation (from like bad diaper rash/diarrhea over a period of time that irritates the area) but is primarily due to really low estrogen levels. There is all sorts of controversy over how to treat because if an easy manual separation isn't possible a lot of doctors will prescribe estrogen cream to get them to separate. There is always a chance of it reoccurring once it has happened until puberty when estrogen levels rise, and then usually it is no longer an issue. My daughter's pedi said he has seen severe ones where actual blood vessels form between the labia because they are so enmeshed :/ Biggest concern is when it blocks the urethra opening as it can lead to chronic UTIs/vaginal infections from urine not draining properly or backing up into the vagina.

I'm sure there are crazy things with boys too, but girls definitely have their challenges...

  • They warned us about the mini-period thing in our childbirthing class. The human body is such a weird and amazing thing.
  • Yep, it's called "pseudomenstruation."

  • Thank God I'm having a boy lol. I would freak out if a saw that!
  • @Lalala2326 and @kelseyrayay we had to deal with separating foreskin adhesions with DS for the first 15 months of his life. Poor little guy. I still worry about nerve damage or painful erections down the road :(

My cousin told me when she had to remove the bandage from after the surgery her son screamed and screamed. I'll have to make my DH do all the "dirty work" I couldn't handle seeing him hurting so much.
  • Thanks for the info! Now when my baby girl is born I won't freak!

So glad you posted this, after two boys I just expect boners! :-S
  • With my first DD this never happened but with this baby (1 week old) she had blood in her diaper. I knew not to freak out bc I was aware it could happen. It's hormones flushing through baby. It was just a tiny amount but DH started to panick but luckily I knew what was going on. It only did it twice then stopped. They can also leak milk from their nipples, also just from the rush of hormones leaving their body
  • Thanks for the post, good to know - lots of females in my family and I'd never heard of this!
  • I've heard moms estrogen is also why some baby boys are born with 'boobs'
  • yes, mini periods for both of my girls (while still in hospital so I didn't freak out, because DR. was there to explain)  DD1 had a labial adhesion too ( found and treated around 3 months old) and we had to put the estrogen cream between her outer and inner labial lips (she still had lots of UTI's)   DD 2 had  vaginal adhesions and we had to see a pediatric urologist and use estrogen cream on her -which she cried about and would say "sorry" over and over and DEVASTATED me- she was about 2 and was having uti like symptoms when the Dr. decide she needed to be treated (apparently some girls grow out of it in puberty, and some have to treat it then)  NOT FUN!

  • Mine had a large amount of white discharge, you also have to be careful not to wipe too much on the first day.  I recall that my husband got the pseudomenstruation diaper, which was fun. They warned us it was common, but I think it may happen to only a third of the babies.
