Projectile vomit?

my daughter is one week old and is being breast fed. Since my milk came in she starting spitting up just a little if you moved her after eating. Today I didn't move her and she projectile vomited. After she had thick slobber so I used the sucky ball to suck it from the sides of her moth and under her tongue. When I called to talk to the nurse at the ped office she acted like it was no big deal bc it had happened only one time. Now I'm terrified and I'm scared to feed her. Obviously I will but I'm just scared. Has this happened to anyone before? Did it continue or was it just a one time thing?

Re: Projectile vomit?

  • I think the quantity & frequency plus baby's weight gain are all factors in determining if this is actually a problem. I'd definitely agree, 1 time is nothing to worry about. Especially if she didn't seem unhappy. My 1st was a MAJOR spitter. As in, multiple spit ups with each feeding, regardless of my diet, burping, positioning, etc. But he was never uncomfortable and always had good weight gain, so we didn't stress. He grew out of it eventually as well. It can be unsettling, but wait to see if there's a pattern before stressing too much! Good luck momma :)

  • Thank you! I hope it doesn't happen again
  • It happened to my little one yesterday too! I called the doctor as well. They attribute it to too much milk too quickly and said its no big deal at all. What I have to do is keep taking her off the boob to burp and then continue feeding. I do this up to five times a feeding.. Also, keep your babe upright after eating. It's normal!
  • Hm I took my girls to doctor for spitting up and she explained tyne difference between reflux and reflux ospogathis? If he keeps projectile vomiting it sounds like the latter which they will give medicine for. More signs is not wanting to feed or wanting to but acting like it hurts. It's due to acidity in the body.
  • Uh, my first did this for like 6 weeks, it's pretty normal. As long as baby doesn't look uncomfortable and it doesn't actually smell like vomit (it should smell like milk or spoiled milk, not actual vomit) she's probably fine. It gets better :)
  • I was concerned about how much my baby was spitting up and we asked her pediatrician yesterday at her two week appt. He said that if it's not forceful heaving like when adults vomit, it's probably still just spit up, even if it looks like a lot or is "projectile". Esp if it smells like sour milk, which hers does. Nasty.
  • @Ckorines so when you feed her at night time how long to you keep her upright before putting her on her back to sleep? Maybe this is my problem!?
  • I wait about 15 minutes now. I either sit up in the rocker or prop my pillows up against the head rest and sit up with her on my chest. I burp her the whole time and if I get a couple of burps out I will put her down earlier. If I don't get a burp out, then I just keep her upright for the full time. As I get to know my daughter more I can tell what she needs. If she sucks her hand, she's still hungry and when she arches her back and locks her legs I know she's gassy, so I proceed according to her body language. Listen to what your babe is trying to tell you. It may help!

i know it's scary to be a new mom and see your babe do something so crazy. My doctor assured me that if it didn't continue consistently, then it was just an isolated incident due to the over abundance of milk. It's nice to talk to other mommas who are going thru the same thing! Hope this helps. Keep us posted.
  • Projectile vomiting is normal. It is a worry if they do it everytime your baby eats and also the amount.
  • Mine did this his first couple days of life, he had swallowed mucus and blood during birth that made him sick, it was so scary! Now we just feed him little bit at a time and burp him frequently , it has helped a ton !
  • Thanks everyone! It is very scary. She hasn't done it since but she did spit up a little when I laid her down to change her diaper 40 min after eating.

I'm hoping that I get to know my LO that well! I'm trying!
  • Our baby was projectile vomiting 1x a day about every other day. I think it's just the problem with having a tiny tummy and a primitive system. She's 3 weeks now. We keep her upright 20 min after feeding and make sure to burp her well after feedings and that's been helping. But it totally freaks you out when they explode like The Exorcist!

Someone once told me that the birth of a child is like a blind date with the love of your life. Give it sometime as you get to know each other. It sounds like you are doing a beautiful job already. Good luck momma.

    That's beautiful!! :x
  • Aww shucks @corndogrobot. I guess it beats the mucus plug talk!
  • Generally if they throw up after breast feeding it could mean that they have a milk intolerance! That's what happened to my LO and he has to be on hypoallergenic formula now
  • Mine has done in a handful of times too...I try to keep her upright and burp her more often. I also give her gas drops a few times during the day to help her not have a gas build up. She takes in air at the breast as I hear the clicking sound of her breaking suction. I'm also trying to cut back on dairy.
  • It's okay. She may have just eaten to much, to fast. Maybe she has a little acid reflux. Be careful what you eat. Spicy foods and gasy foods can effect her. If it continues, keep her sitting up right for 20 minutes after, and be sure to see her ped. My middle child had to be put in Zantac. Also.. If it becomes frequent, have her seen ASAP. It can be a sign of piloric stenosis. But since she didn't do it till a week old, then it's most likely not that.
  • ^ actually pyloric stenosis usually shows up around a month, not right at birth.
  • Saw my daughters pediatrician today for her one month check up. The doctor, who is a specialist in NICU babies and infants said that CONSTANT projectile vomit is a concern for reflux and anatomical issues in babies Gastro system. However, she said that occasional vomiting where baby is gaining weight and thriving is a non issue. She says that is more of a sign that baby is feeding well and gassy or over fed due to cluster feeding. She said that babies who get a lot of milk quickly can develop a gas bubble. When that bubble comes to the surface it will create a vomit reflex. Try not to worry mommies. She made it seem normal. Hope this puts you at ease.

Treatment was, shorter feelings with more frequent burping, and keeping the baby upright.
  • Thank you! I have been doing just that and so far so good! It hasn't happened again. I also started going to a breast feeding support group to make sure we are doing the best we can. I really want to be successful with breast feeding and baby raising (: thank you.
  • It sounds like you are doing just that!

Really? I didn't know that. My middle child started projectiling around 5 weeks. I just always thought "why are they concerned over this.. Seems she would have done it before now.
