Is a pacifier a lost cause at this point?

DD appears to enjoy the pacifier and it does soothe her but she has zero ability to hold it in her mouth by herself. She doesn't spit it out, it usually just falls out or her tongue moving around pushes it out. I like the fact that she is calmed and soothed by it but don't really see myself holding it in her mouth too much longer in the future. So my question is whether holding it in her mouth herself is something she can still grow into/learn or are we pretty much past that point? She is 3 mo. TIA!

Have you tried different brands?  It could be that the size/shape of the pacifiers you have just don't work for her.

  • @erin79 - I've tried about 3 brands. It's probably a good idea to try a few others before giving up. Thanks!
  • I've read that if you try to gently pull it from her mouth (and she sucks it back in) over and over it will train her to keep sucking on it for longer. Not sure how true this is but maybe worth a shot?
  • I've heard the same thing as @SmrBrd2012. Once she sucks on it a couple of times gently pull it back so she learns she had to suck to keep it in. We've been doing this with DS and he seems to be better about keeping it in now
  • wow we are in the same boat with my little. she has the hardest time taking the pacifier and then keeping it in her mouth. if we bob it in and out she'll usually latch onto it but it doesn't ever stay in very long. she's three months too and this past week she's started sucking on her wrist just below her thumb, silly girl. interested to see what other people have to say too
  • Have you tried MAM brand? My LO hated all others but she'll keep those in sometimes.
  • Keep trying! My LO is 11 weeks and just the past couple of weeks she has been able to keep it in her mouth without assistance. It is a godsend when I can't immediately whip out a boob and she is getting hungry or if she is over tired and it's not time to eat. Try different brands, mine seems to like the mams the best. Good luck ;)
  • We tried about 5 brands before we finally founds ones our LO liked. Luckily we got lots of different ones at our shower. We finally landed on the MAM brand and our LO holds them in quite well.

  • Have you tried a WubbaNub? My LO tends to be calmed by the pacifier but it always fell out and I'd find myself constantly holding it there. I used the WubbaNub with the little animal attached to it and now it stays on his chest. If he fusses and opens his mouth, it's right there to suck on again. Not to mention it's the cutest thing in the world to see your LO hold onto this tiny stuffed animal :)
  • I have tried Avent soothie, Mam and Nuby without much luck. I am re-trying the Mam since its been awhile. The wubbanub sounds promising, too. I will definitely try that next, along with the "training" tips mentioned. Thanks all!

Thank you for posting! It's like you're describing my LO, i tried many brands too, maybe i'll go back totrying them again.
  • We got a mam as a sample and it stays in so much better than the soothie we were using before!

  • Try Dr Browns that's my daughters favorite and the easiest for her.

Also big fans of the MAM.  Try the newborn size; they always seem to stay in better than the 0-6 month ones.
  • My LO just turned 3
Months and she likes to spit it out just to get me to stick it back in because it makes her laugh! It's her fav game ! Lol
