Baby not sucking on bottle nipples or pacifier

My peanut is a little over 2 months old and has been breastfeeding since birth. He has not really utilized a pacifier besides maybe 2-3 occasions. We began introducing the bottle (with my breast milk) 5 days ago in preparation for a wedding we are attending in 1 day, and all he does is bite (or gum) the bottle nipples. Even when dipping them in my milk or squirting a little out so he knows what it's all about, he still just nibbles on the nipple, smiles and coos and thinks it's a game. We have tried 6 different brands of pacifiers and 5 different brands of bottles with 6 different nipples. He just doesn't suck on them to realize he can get milk out of them. Any thoughts on how to get him to suck and then hopefully successfully ingest the milk for a feeding?

  • Did you let someone else give it? And did you make sure he's actually hungry? My son who is bottle feed does this with bottles when he's not hungry.
    Good luck!

  • Did you try warming the nipple up. Sometimes that helps. And I agree with pp ^ let someone else give the bottle of mom is there they tend to want to play.
  • My baby did that we had to try a few days before she got what it was. I know this doesn't help you know but it can take a while before a breastfed baby will accept a bottle, you should have started earlier

  • Yes, my husband has been trying the bottle without me present. Yes we have tried warming the nipples, and the lactation specialist at the hospital said to start trying 5 days prior to the wedding. I'm so disappointed. We definitely should have started earlier. I hope he gets it before I have to go back to work on Aug 17 :(

The first night, we tried giving him he bottle in place of one of his evening feeds but he was so angry about not getting what he expected that he cried the whole time and my husband couldn't even get the nipple to stay in his mouth. So we were then told to try introducing it when he was starving.

We're just going to keep trying of course... Thank you.
  • I don't know if this will help or not. But have you tried feeding him with anything other than a bottle? When DS was a week old he was having an impossible time latching. I didn't want to introduce a bottle that early in fear of nipple confusion. My doula recommended feeding him by spoon or with a shot glass. We did both. You have to be extremely cautious, especially with the shot glass, but it might get your LO used to drinking the milk from something other than the breast. If he accepts it from the milk or glass then try offering the bottle with some milk on the nipple so he knows he's just getting it in another form again.

Just a suggestion. I have no idea if it'll work for you. My DS was able to do it from both methods and didn't have any trouble when we finally did introduce the bottle at 4 weeks. Hopefully it works for you!

I am in the same situation but have been trying for over a month now. Have tried 5 different bottles and many different people giving her it and she either screams hysterically or plays with the nipple. I go back to work in less than a month so my mom has her work cut out for her

  • Tonight I will have my Mom give it a try. I am also going to give her a little cup and some spoons to try as well. Maybe she will have the magic touch.
  • You could also try dipping the nipple in a sugar water mixture.
  • Been working on my lil guy for a few weeks now and he occasionally takes the bottle... I can totally sympathize with your frustration.
  • We've been trying for four weeks. No progress. She will not suck on it.
  • Same problem! She finally started taking a bottle that she refused in the beginning. She took s bottle at 4 weeks and then started refusing at 6 weeks. We gave it a rest for a few days and she would scream when it touched her mouth. With persistence, she finally would take only an ounce or two from my mom and DH but not me. Now at almost 13 weeks she's taking it from everybody! It just takes time. I would offer it, if she refused then wait 5-10 min and try again, try again. She finally took it.

  • I'm having similar problems as well. My mil watched her for a few hours last night and got her to kind of suck on a bottle by keeping her upright in her bouncy chair with her hand behind lo's back. She drank 1
5 oz which is better than nothing I guess. She refused and would scream if she tried to give the bottle while holding her. So maybe try different postion as well?
  • Maybe try nursing for a few seconds, remove your nipple and replace with the bottle. You can also try waiting until she is very sleepy before switching to the bottle. This worked for me when I was weaning my first.

  • We had the same problem from 6-9 weeks. I called in my mom for help. This sounds weird, but when she gave him the bottle, she would make a sucking noise and it either distracted him so much or he was trying to mimic her, but it worked! He still fought her for 3 days (but he drank the bottles), and by day 4 she had him back on track.
