GBS Positive ?

I searched but didn't find what I was looking for. I have an appointment tomorrow and will be asking doctor. I can view my test results through an app on my phone, I noticed today my GBS came back positive. I have absolutely no clue if I was even tested with my son and don't remember receiving antibiotics while in labor... but I'm curious, if any of you have tested positive did you go to hospital immediately when you realized you were in labor? With my son I went into labor 30 minutes before I left for my scheduled induction at 41+2 and instead of laboring at home I went straight to l&d. I was hoping to labor at home a while this time to avoid being in a bed for 16 hours again...

Re: GBS Positive ?

  • I believe I was told to go right to L & D if labor started but you'll want to ask your doctor. I had to be induced so it didn't matter at that point. I was able to get up and labor on a birthing ball and walk the halls, I just had to carry my IV pole with me (pain in the ass, yes). So I didn't feel confined to a bed at all, definitely bring it up to your nurses that you don't want that either. Since it was an induction, I had plenty of time to get the 2 bags in.

    Good luck!

  • I was told that I need to go to L&D right away because the antibiotics are given every 4 hours and you need at least 2 doses. You aren't hooked up to the antibiotics the whole time so you shouldn't be totally confined to bed.
  • I am pretty sure they want you on antibiotics right away.

Last time, I never even got tested because my water broke at home and I had my daughter before my 36w appointment, when they planned on testing.  I was put on antibiotics soon after arriving at L&D.

  • I think the general rule is to head in to L&D as soon as you know it's the real deal. You will still be able to move around and labour somewhat freely, just not in the comfort of your own home.

Thanks ladies. I'll be asking more at my appointment and getting info. ;)
  • I had my son early at 33 weeks (too early for the GBS test) and did not receive antibiotics at the hospital (everything went way too fast and there was no time). Apparently I was GBS positive, and GBS was one of the things he fought while in the NICU (along with severe anemia, pneumonia, sepsis, and spinal meningitis). It *can* cause respiratory distress, but don't panic just because you are positive. I read that GBS affects in the infant in 10% of babies born to positive moms. We were just lucky. ;)

As for antibiotics, don't they just put it into your IV when you arrive?

  • I tested neg with my first, but was positive this time. We actually are at the hospital now! Labor went much quicker than we expected, and there was only time for me to have one IV dose before she arrived. Accordingly, she had a CBC blood test about eight hours postpartum, but no additional antibiotics were determined necessary. If her WBC had been elevated, she would receive antibiotics. Good luck!
  • I tested positive for gbs with my 1st baby and you will have to ask your doctor/midwife about their procedures as to when to go to the hospital. I was able to test negative this time around by eating plenty of Greek yogurt, taking 2 probiotic pills daily, eating raw chopped up garlic and keeping insanely clean down there. I even did a few overnights with inserting garlic in the vagina to get rid of the bacteria and it worked. I was negative this time. So if you are worried about it you can always try this to remove the gbs before baby comes if you still have time! To he on the safe side. ..Just a thought, definantly not an expert.
  • I tested positive for the first time this time around, I was negative my first two pregnancies. I was also told by my doc to consider going in a bit sooner for the antibiotics, and honestly it bums me out. I wanted to remain at home for a really long time and be in the hospital for as little time as possible. I did that with my second and enjoyed it more so than with my first, where I was at the hospital forever. With my second I was there for less than two hours before he came.

I will say I also didn't REALIZE I was in labor the second time until it really late, so that is part of why I didn't go in. So I'm a bit scared the same thing will happen this time and I'm not going to be there in enough time to get the antibiotics. They said just play it by ear and go when I think I need to, so I'm praying this time it's obvious to me when to go and that I still have a relatively quick labor in the hospital. And that I get at least some of the antibiotics, they say some is better than none.
